# Crook Bay (Crooks Bay), Virgin Gorda

Crook Bay is a small cove of sand and boulders on Virgin Gorda's south shore, a short way east of Devil's Bay, below a quiet estate of villas. It is mostly a beach for the houses above it: The Baths' granite without the pass or the people. The catch is the way down, and nothing waits at the bottom.

**Conditions:** Rocks and boulders at both ends of a small cove. It faces southeast into the trade wind, so expect a chop on most days, and it is sheltered from the winter swells that reach the west-facing beaches, by our read of the map. A south swell from a passing storm in hurricane season, June to November, runs straight in. No lifeguard and no facilities as of October 2026.

## Routes to Crook Bay, Virgin Gorda

About 12 minutes by car from Spanish Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: [British Virgin Islands map](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/map), [British Virgin Islands weather, month by month](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/weather), [Ferries between the British Virgin Islands](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/ferry), [Getting to the British Virgin Islands](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/getting-there), [Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/things-to-do).

## Getting down to Crook Bay

By car or taxi from the Spanish Town ferry dock, south through The Valley toward The Baths and then east along the lanes of the estate above the bay, 12 minutes to the end of the drive. No lot is mapped. From the lane it is about 90 m to the sand in a straight line; the mapped lane and footpath take about four minutes to within about 70 m of it, by our measurement, and a footpath is mapped for part of the way, though no public right of way is marked.

Park tidily on the lane, keep off the driveways, and if a path is unclear, ask at a villa rather than crossing a garden. A taxi will drop you but nobody waits to call one back, so agree the pickup time first. By sea, the Trust's moorings are at Devil's Bay and The Baths, not here.

## Is Crook Bay public, and is it part of the park?

The sand is public. On March 9, 2023, the territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly that all BVI beaches are public, and that even where a beach adjoins private property, access must still be provided. The houses and gardens above are private; the shore and the water are not.

It is not, as far as anything published shows, part of the park next door. The National Parks Trust's Devil's Bay page covers 58 acres at the island's southwestern tip and names no bay to the east, and its Greater Baths Day Pass names Devil's Bay, The Baths, Stoney Bay and Spring Bay. So there is no pass to buy and no closing time here, and by the same token no ranger, no restroom and nobody minding the beach.

## Swimming and snorkeling in Crook Bay

A short stretch of sand, about 150 m end to end, with granite boulders at both ends and rock pools among them, the same stone as The Baths on a quieter shore. The snorkeling is around those rocks, and we rate it 3 of 5: worth a look with a mask, nothing to plan a day around, and no account read describes a reef offshore.

The cove faces southeast, into the trade wind and the open water south of the island. By our read of the map, that means a chop on most days and clearer water when the wind drops, but shelter from the winter swells that close The Baths' moorings, since those come at the west-facing shore. The Trust's Devil's Bay page describes the Atlantic swells pummeling the coast at Stoney Bay, the island's tip to the west, so keep to the cove and its rocks. There is no lifeguard.

The tradeoff: Crook Bay gives you the boulders and the quiet, and nothing else. Bring water, shade and lunch. It suits a couple or a family staying in the estate above; for a first look at the granite with a lawn and a picnic table, Spring Bay is the easier morning.

## Questions people ask about Crook Bay, Virgin Gorda

On the south shore of the island's southwest end, about 1 km east of Devil's Bay, below a residential estate. It is 12 minutes by car from the Spanish Town ferry dock to the lane above the bay, by our measurement, then about 90 m on foot to the sand. OpenStreetMap spells it Crooks Bay.

### Can you go to Crook Bay if you are not staying there?

Yes. The territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly on March 9, 2023, that all BVI beaches are public and that access must be provided even beside private property. No lot or public right of way is marked, so park tidily on the lane and ask the way down.

### Is Crook Bay part of The Baths National Park?

Not by anything published. The National Parks Trust's Greater Baths Day Pass names Devil's Bay, The Baths, Stoney Bay and Spring Bay, and its Devil's Bay page names no bay to the east, as of October 2026. By our read there is no fee, no posted hours and no ranger at Crook Bay.

### Is Crook Bay good for swimming and snorkeling?

Fair, by our read: 3 of 5 for snorkeling around the boulders at both ends, with no reef described offshore. The cove faces southeast into the trade wind, so expect a chop on most days but shelter from the winter swells on the west coast. There is no lifeguard and nothing is rented.
