# Jost Van Dyke bars and restaurants, bay by bay

Every Jost Van Dyke bar worth the crossing is a beach bar, and the two best known sit in neighboring bays a hill apart. Foxy's holds the east end of Great Harbour, where the ferry lands; the Soggy Dollar shares White Bay with Hendo's Hideout. Lunch here belongs to the day boats, and dinner to whoever stays the night.

## Jost Van Dyke bars in Great Harbour and White Bay

Great Harbour is the front door. The ferry jetty and the customs office stand in the middle of the bay, and Foxy's Tamarind Bar holds the east end of the beach, serving since 1968 by its own account and open from morning to midnight when the crowd stays. Its site lists lunch and dinner and takes table bookings, and Foxy Callwood is at the barbecue most mornings and early afternoons, by the same page. On December 31 the harbor fills for its Old Year's Night, ticketed on its site.

White Bay is the next bay west, a short drive over the hill or 24 minutes on foot by our measurement. [The Soggy Dollar Bar](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/things-to-do/soggy-dollar-bar) there says the Painkiller originated at its bar in the 1970s; it serves breakfast, lunch and evening appetizers, prints no hours, and has no dock, so boats anchor off and guests swim or wade in, which is how the bar got its name. Hendo's Hideout, on the same sand since 2016, serves three meals every day, with sushi on Thursdays and a Sunday brunch, and books tables online.

## Where to have dinner on Jost Van Dyke

At Foxy's or Hendo's Hideout. Both list dinner menus and take bookings on their own sites; the Soggy Dollar stops at evening appetizers. Book the table before you book the boat: a dinner here means a night in a house on the island, a water taxi arranged both ways, or a boat of your own on a mooring.

## The tradeoff: the day boats and the last ferry

White Bay is the bay the day charters come for. From late morning to about 3 pm the moorings fill and the sand in front of the bars is crowded; from a house on the hill, lunch is better early or late. The last ferry back to Tortola leaves Great Harbour at 5 pm, so a day visitor eats lunch here and is gone before most kitchens light the grill.

## Questions about Jost Van Dyke restaurants and bars

### What is the most famous bar on Jost Van Dyke?

Two share the title. The Soggy Dollar Bar on White Bay says the Painkiller originated there in the 1970s; Foxy's Tamarind Bar in Great Harbour has served its beach since 1968 by its own account and is open to midnight. Both are a boat ride from Tortola or St. John.

### Is there a dock at the Soggy Dollar Bar?

No. The bar took its name from the wet dollars of guests who swam ashore, by its own history, and boats still anchor or moor off White Bay and swim or dinghy in. From a house on the hill you walk down. It publishes no hours, as of October 2026.

### Can you eat dinner on Jost Van Dyke?

Yes, at Foxy's in Great Harbour and Hendo's Hideout on White Bay, which both list dinner menus and take table bookings on their own sites as of October 2026. Arrange the ride home first: the last scheduled ferry to Tortola leaves Great Harbour at 5 pm.
