# British Virgin Islands family vacation

Written by Virgin Islands Villas·Updated Oct 2026

A British Virgin Islands family vacation works best on one island. Virgin Gorda's flat south end puts the calm beaches a short, level drive from town; on Tortola's north shore, dinner at Cane Garden Bay can be a walk. The catch is the border: every child needs a passport, US citizens included, and the fees come per head.

## Which BVI island suits a family with children

Virgin Gorda's south end, for most families. Spanish Town and The Valley sit on flat ground by our measurement, the ferry jetty is close, and the Baths, Spring Bay and [Savannah Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/beaches/savannah-bay) are each a short, level drive from the town's stores. Stay there and the beach day starts after breakfast, not after a drive.

Tortola suits a family that wants a village: Cane Garden Bay is the one beach on the island with [restaurants along the sand](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/eat-and-drink/tortola), so dinner is a walk, and Road Town is over the ridge. Brewers Bay, one bay east, is the same coast with one bar and fewer people. Both mean a car and driving on the left.

Jost Van Dyke and Anegada suit a second trip. Everything on Jost Van Dyke arrives by boat and the stores are small; Anegada's ferry runs on an alternate-fortnight calendar. The private-island resorts are their own decision: Guana Island limits the number of children in winter and gives them a separate beach, Scrub Island allows no personal vehicles, and Peter Island adds 25 percent in tax and service charge, each by its own pages.

Across the border, the [US Virgin Islands with kids](https://virginislandvilla.com/usvi/usvi-family-vacation) works the same way, island by island.

## The calmest BVI beaches for young children

Spring Bay on Virgin Gorda is the beach the National Parks Trust fits out for families: a palm-lined avenue from the road, a lawn with children's swings, picnic tables and a barbecue grill, and inside the Crawl a small bay closed by a ring of boulders that the Trust calls a natural swimming pool. [Devil's Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/bvi/beaches/devils-bay), in the Trust's words a tranquil place to swim and snorkel, is a short walk from the Baths lot through dry scrub and boulders.

The Baths themselves suit older children. The trail between the boulders asks you to crawl, climb ladders and wade, per the Trust, and in winter strong swells can bring currents that make swimming unwise there.

On Tortola, Cane Garden Bay sits behind headlands and is flat for much of the year, but the north-west swell of winter, roughly November to March, runs straight in on those days. Josiah's Bay is the surf beach: from about November to March the north swell brings surf and rip currents, with no lifeguard, so it is no place for a toddler in winter.

## A passport for every child, US citizens included

The BVI is another country, and the rule is the same for a baby as for a grandparent. The Government of the Virgin Islands requires a valid passport book of every visitor, or a US passport card from a US citizen, for the length of the stay, under the rule in force since March 1, 2025; its release names no exception for children. The card works on the ferry, not on a plane: US Customs and Border Protection takes only the passport book from a US citizen flying home, so a family flying into or out of Beef Island needs books for everyone. The ferry companies ask each passenger to fill in the territory's online immigration and customs form before arrival.

The fees come per head, on top of the fare, on Smith's Ferry's list as of October 2026:

| Charge, per passenger | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| Port fee leaving St. Thomas | $10 |
| Environmental fee on arrival in the BVI | $10 |
| Departure tax leaving the BVI, non-residents | $20 |
| There and back, each | $40 |

For a family of four that is $160 before the first ticket. Coming home, a US family clears U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the same passports or cards.

## Taking the BVI ferries with children

From St. Thomas the boats leave Charlotte Amalie for Road Town, a 50-minute crossing by Road Town Fast Ferry's figure, and Red Hook for West End; the fare is quoted when you book. Smith's Ferry asks you to check in at least 45 minutes before, allows one free carry-on of 18 by 14 by 8 inches, and charges boxes and packed coolers as cargo, so the week's groceries are better bought in Road Town than carried from St. Thomas. Every bag goes through customs with its owner on the other side.

Inside the BVI, Speedy's runs Road Town and Beef Island to Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda, on its rates page as of October 2026:

| Speedy's fare | One way | Round trip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Adult, 12 and over | $30 | $40 |
| Child, 5 to 11 | $20 | $30 |
| Child, 3 or 4 | $10 | $20 |

Arriving by air at Beef Island, Cane Garden Bay is the far side of Tortola, so a late flight with tired children is a reason to stay the first night near the airport or in Road Town.

## What a BVI family vacation costs beyond the villa

Each villa's rate for your dates is on its own page, set by the owner. The rest is a short list of fixed charges, here for two adults and two children aged 5 to 11, as of October 2026:

| For a family of four | Cost |
| --- | --- |
| Government fees, St. Thomas and back | $160 |
| Speedy's round trip to Virgin Gorda | $140 |
| The Baths, Devil's Bay and Spring Bay, one day pass | $10 |

Add a rental car, which you will want on either island, and the groceries.

The tradeoff: a BVI week runs on ferry timetables and a border, with a passport check each way and boats that keep their own hours. A family that wants none of that stays on one island, picks a house near a calm beach, and leaves the boat days for the older children.

## Questions about the BVI

### Do children need a passport to visit the BVI?

Yes. The Government of the Virgin Islands requires a valid passport book of every visitor, or a US passport card from a US citizen arriving by sea, and its release names no exception for children. A family that flies in or out needs passport books, since the card is not accepted for air travel back to the US. A birth certificate does not get a child into the BVI, though US citizens need no passport on St. Thomas or St. John.

### Is the BVI good for a family with young children?

For a family that settles on one island, yes. Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda is flat, with the Baths 9 minutes away and Spring Bay, with its swings and its boulder-ringed pool, 9 minutes as well. The costs to plan for are the border: a passport for every child and $40 a head in government fees from St. Thomas and back.

### Which BVI beach is calmest for small children?

By our read, Spring Bay on Virgin Gorda, where the Crawl is a small bay ringed by boulders that the National Parks Trust calls a natural swimming pool, with swings and picnic tables on the lawn behind. On Tortola, Cane Garden Bay is flat much of the year but takes the north-west swell on winter days.

### How much is the ferry to Virgin Gorda for children?

On Speedy's, from Road Town or Beef Island to Spanish Town, $20 one way and $30 round trip for a child of 5 to 11, and $10 and $20 for a child of 3 or 4, as of October 2026. Adults, 12 and over, pay $30 and $40. Children under 3 ride free.
