## What was the Annaberg sugar plantation?

It was a sugar estate worked by enslaved Africans, and the National Park Service says over 600 of them lived and worked there at the height of its production. The park dates the plantation to the 18th and 19th centuries, the Danish colonial era, when the island was St. Jan and the sugar boom of the 1800s was at its peak. By the early 19th century it was one of the biggest sugar producers on St. John, and it also made molasses and rum for export.

The park does not tell it as a story about machinery. Its activity page says the plantation holds a complex history of the violent displacement of Indigenous people, European settlement and the enslavement of Africans, and that "over 600 enslaved Africans worked this plantation under brutal conditions." Its history pages tie the brutality to the global market for sugar, and ask visitors to learn about the oppression, the resistance and the culture of the enslaved people of St. John. We follow the park's account and add nothing to it.

## Walking the Annaberg ruins: windmill, factory, quarters

The Annaberg ruins are a self-guided walk, and the park puts the visit at one to two hours. An interpretive trail passes the windmill tower, the factory and the quarters. The park calls Annaberg its most accessible historic plantation site.

The walk takes in four things, in the park's description. The windmill and the animal mill, which crushed the cane to extract its juice, still stand. Much of the sugar factory remains, where the juice was boiled and condensed into raw sugar, and so does part of the rum still. On the hillside between the factory and the water are the ruins of the quarters where the enslaved men, women and children who built the factory slept.

Docents answer questions about Annaberg's history Monday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm, from November to April, on the park's page as last updated in June 2022. That page is four years old, so ask at the visitor center in Cruz Bay before you plan a weekday around it.

## Leinster Bay and the escape to Tortola

Annaberg was built on the Leinster Bay waterfront, and the park records that shore for what happened on it: many people enslaved on St. John used it to escape to freedom on Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, across the water to the north. The National Park Service lists the Leinster Bay waterfront as part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

The same bay is a snorkel. Waterlemon Cay, the small island off its east end, is reached on the Leinster Bay Trail from the Annaberg lot and then a swim. Boats use the park's moorings in the bay, and Leinster Bay has one of the park's pay stations for them.

## How to get to the Annaberg plantation on St. John

Drive. Annaberg is at the end of a spur road off North Shore Road, signed from the turn, and the lot is about 27 minutes from Cruz Bay by the route we measured. The park publishes no count of parking spaces.

From St. Thomas, the day starts on the Red Hook ferry to Cruz Bay, then a rental car or a taxi from the dock.

Walk up from the lot to the ruins. The path is short and climbs, and the park's own description is the honest one: steep and rocky until you reach the buildings, then flat and easy among them.

## Is Annaberg free, and when is it open?

Annaberg is free. The National Park Service charges no entrance fee for Virgin Islands National Park and no fee for cars on its roads, as of its fees page of September 29, 2026, and the Annaberg activity page lists no activity fee.

The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, by its hours page, and lists Annaberg as a daytime visit with no gate times of its own. The visitor center in Cruz Bay is the place for anything the website leaves out: it keeps Monday to Thursday hours of 8:15 am to 4 pm, and Friday to 1:30 pm, on the park's site in October 2026, and its number is 340 776-6201. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

## Is the Annaberg trail accessible?

Not easily from the lot, and the park says two things about it. The Annaberg activity page, last updated in April 2021, says the trail from the parking lot to the historic district is fairly steep and rocky and that the grade exceeds wheelchair safety standards. The park's accessibility page, updated in January 2026, describes a wheelchair accessible path that winds through the ruins.

Read together, the path among the buildings is the easy part and the climb from the lot is the hard one. Anyone using a wheelchair or pushing a stroller should call the visitor center before driving out. The tradeoff, for everyone else: no restrooms, water or food are listed anywhere on the park's pages for Annaberg, so bring water and stop in Cruz Bay first.
