# St. John honeymoon

Written by Virgin Islands Villas · Updated Oct 10, 2026 · [How this was checked](https://virginislandvilla.com/editorial-policy)

A St. John honeymoon happens inside a national park: almost 58 percent of the island's land is park, per the National Park Service. The house shapes the week: every area but Cruz Bay needs a car, and the East End is up to 43 minutes from town. Below: areas measured for couples, the months, and the park's and court's rules.

## Where to stay on St. John as a couple

Only Cruz Bay has the town and a beach both within a walk; everywhere else on St. John, a couple chooses between the North Shore below the house and the drive in to dinner. The table gives the minutes on foot to sand, the minutes by car to Cruz Bay and the slope, from the middle of each area.

| Area | Beach on foot | To Cruz Bay | Ground |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cruz Bay | 8 min | in town | rolling |
| Hawksnest | 2 min | 8 min | steep |
| Peter Bay | 5 min | 15 min | steep |
| Chocolate Hole | 14 min | 7 min | steep |
| Catherineberg | by car, 5 min | 12 min | rolling |
| Coral Bay | by car, 5 min | 26 min | rolling |
| Johns Folly | 7 min | 37 min | steep |
| Privateer | 7 min | 43 min | steep |

Measured on the island's roads, September 2026.

Cruz Bay is the one area where a car is only recommended: dinner is on foot and the town beach 8 minutes away. Hawksnest and Peter Bay put the North Shore at the bottom of the hill, 2 and 5 minutes on foot, on steep ground that means low gear on the driveway. Johns Folly and Privateer are as far from town as St. John goes, 37 and 43 minutes, with water a short walk down. If quiet for you means distance, that is where it is; the cost is the drive back for every meal you do not cook.

## How far is dinner in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay?

Cruz Bay is the town at the ferry dock, and Coral Bay, the settlement on the east side, is 26 minutes from it by our measurement. A couple staying in Coral Bay eats nearer home most nights; a couple staying anywhere on the South Shore or North Shore drives to Cruz Bay.

The drive home is in the dark. Sunset at Cruz Bay falls between 5:41 pm in late November and 6:59 pm in early July, by our calculation, so a dinner reservation in any month ends after nightfall. On a steep road that is the part to plan: one of you drives, or you book a table near enough to walk.

## When is the best time for a St. John honeymoon?

St. John's own rain gauge, at Coral Bay, records February as its driest month: 1.6 inches on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) 1991 to 2020 normals. Across Pillsbury Sound, the airport station on St. Thomas, the nearest with a temperature record, has February and March tied at 1.9 inches, with highs of 84 and 85 degrees.

January to June is the stretch with no storm on the record: NOAA's hurricane tracks show no tropical system within 100 km of St. John in those months in the 34 seasons from 1991 to 2024. June is the last of those months: 2.6 inches at Coral Bay, highs of 89 at the airport.

August to October is where the record sits, with September carrying five systems, four of them hurricanes. November is the wettest month at both stations: 6.1 inches at the airport and 7.2 at Coral Bay. The St. John weather page has every month, and an autumn booking is the one to read hurricane season for, with what a travel policy covers.

## St. John beaches for two, and the park's rules

Most of the beaches a couple will use are park beaches, and they are free; Trunk Bay is the one with a fee, $5 per person, 16 and over, per the National Park Service as of October 2026. The park does not allow pets on its beaches and asks for reef-safe sunscreen.

Three, in the park's own words: Honeymoon Beach has no road in: it is 1.4 km on foot from the park visitor center in Cruz Bay by the Lind Point Trail, which the park calls narrow and rocky, with a beach club on the sand and a shuttle from the Caneel Bay gate, as of October 2026. Francis Bay, 25 minutes from Cruz Bay at the end of North Shore Road, is one the park calls among its quieter areas. Maho Bay, 18 minutes out, is the beach the park names for sea turtles, seen more often early or late in the day.

Salt Pond Bay on the south shore is a 41-minute drive from Cruz Bay and a 10-minute walk from the lot, which keeps it for the couple who has the car. The Cinnamon Bay campground closes every September and October.

## Getting married on a St. John beach

A beach wedding on St. John needs two things: a marriage license from the court and, on a park beach, a permit from the park. The National Park Service lists weddings among the activities that need a special use permit, with a $50 non-refundable application, about 10 business days to process, and other costs billed where they arise, per its permits page updated June 30, 2026.

The license comes from the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, Family Division. Its marriage page, read October 9, 2026, sets out the following.

| Step | What the court says |
| --- | --- |
| Application | $100, non-refundable |
| License | $100, before pick-up |
| Posting | 8 days for public examination |
| Saturday, Sunday or holiday | $150 more per couple, by arrangement |
| Ceremony by a judge | $400 |
| Blood test | Not required |
| Return | Within 10 days of the ceremony |

The court's page names offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix and none on St. John, so filing online through its e-file portal, paid by card, saves a ferry. Both partners bring a government photo ID. With the eight-day posting and the park's ten business days, apply for both before you fly.

## Getting to St. John, and a resort or a house

St. John has no airport. You land on St. Thomas, drive 36 minutes to Red Hook by our measurement, and take the 20-minute passenger ferry to Cruz Bay, $8.15 an adult one way per Transportation Services of St. John as of October 2026; the St. John ferry page has the timetable and the car barge.

Caneel Bay Resort has not taken overnight guests since the September 2017 hurricanes, per the National Park Service; its beach is open to the public as of October 2026. A house is the other way to do the week: the villas on this page are listed by their owners, who set the rate and answer you themselves; you pay the owner, not a platform, and there is no service fee.

Choose the area by the walk you want, and if you are marrying here, file with the court and the park before you book the flight.
