# St. John taxis and the water taxi from St. Thomas

A water taxi from St. Thomas to St. John is a private boat: from $495 one way from Compass Point Marina with St. Thomas Water Taxi, as of October 2026, or $70 a person from Red Hook with Dolphin Water Taxi, on its fare map dated March 2025. On St. John, safari taxis at the Cruz Bay dock charge per person: $12 to Trunk Bay for one rider, $9 each for two or more, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff in force since October 2022.

## How St. John taxis work from the Cruz Bay dock

Taxi service waits at the ferry terminal in Cruz Bay, and the National Park Service calls the open-air safari taxis your best bet for getting around the island and the park. The drive is 18 minutes to Maho Bay and 28 to Coral Bay by our measurement. Taxis are not metered, and a driver fills the safari before leaving the dock.

A licensed taxi carries a dome light and a plate beginning TP, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority as of October 2026; an unmarked car is not licensed.

## St. John taxi fares from Cruz Bay and Coral Bay

The Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission sets the fares and the Legislature approves them, per the Port Authority. Its tariff, the latest as of October 2026, charges each passenger by destination, with a lower fare each when two or more ride together in one party:

| From | To | One rider | 2 or more, each |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cruz Bay | Caneel Bay | $9 | $8 |
| Cruz Bay | Hawksnest | $9 | $8 |
| Cruz Bay | The Westin | $9 | $7 |
| Cruz Bay | Trunk Bay | $12 | $9 |
| Cruz Bay | Cinnamon Bay | $14 | $11 |
| Cruz Bay | Maho Bay | $17 | $12 |
| Cruz Bay | Francis Bay or Annaberg | $20 | $14 |
| Cruz Bay | Coral Bay | $25 | $15 |
| Cruz Bay | Salt Pond | $30 | $21 |
| Cruz Bay | Lameshur | $38 | $25 |
| Coral Bay | Salt Pond | $11 | $9 |
| Coral Bay | Lameshur | $15 | $10 |

From the Commission's rate card, read in October 2026. Four people from the dock to Trunk Bay pay $36 one way, plus $3 for each bag. The rates in the operator table above are the operators' own, for private boats and private tours.

## What a St. John taxi adds to the fare

Bags are $3 each, $6 at most for anything over 30 by 20 inches, and from midnight to 6 am each rider pays $3 more. Waiting is $1 a minute after the first five; a round trip is two one-way fares plus the wait; a taxi called to the door adds a third of the fare for one rider, or $2 each for a group. A villa the card does not name is charged as the nearest place it does. By the hour, a sedan or minivan for one to four is $60, a van or 14-seat safari $70, a larger safari $90; a two-hour island tour is $70 for one, or $35 each.

The tariff must be posted in every taxi, and the Commission cites a driver who charges more or less, so check the card before anyone climbs in. If it goes wrong, note the plate and call its St. Thomas and St. John office on 340-693-4211.

## The tradeoff: a taxi out needs a time back

The park's advice is to fix a time for the taxi to return, because cell service at the beaches is limited and a call may not go through.

The VITRAN bus runs from the Cruz Bay ferry dock through Coral Bay to Salt Pond Bay and back, usually Monday to Friday, and the park calls it not very reliable.

## Water taxi from St. Thomas to St. John

The Red Hook ferry is $8.15 an adult one way, per Transportation Services of St. John as of October 2026. A water taxi is for landing after the last ferry.

For two people the ferry and a safari cost far less; for a family landing at 11 pm, the boat is the only way across that night.

## Questions about taxis on St. John

**Are there taxis on St. John?**

Yes. Safari taxis and vans wait at the Cruz Bay ferry terminal, per the National Park Service, and the St. John Taxi Association takes calls on 340-693-7530.

**How much are taxis on St. John?**

By the person and the destination, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff. From the Cruz Bay ferry dock, one rider pays $9 to Caneel Bay or Hawksnest, $12 to Trunk Bay and $25 to Coral Bay; two or more pay $8, $9 and $15 each. Bags are $3 each.

**Is there Uber on St. John, USVI?**

Not as of October 2026, as far as we could check: no Virgin Islands place appears on Lyft's city list, and the park's page on getting around St. John names taxis and the VITRAN bus, nothing else.

**Where do you catch the bus at Maho Bay?**

Nowhere we could confirm. The VITRAN route the park describes runs from Cruz Bay through Coral Bay to Salt Pond Bay, not along North Shore Road. To reach Maho Bay without a car, take a safari taxi from the Cruz Bay dock: 18 minutes by car, $17 for one rider or $12 each for two or more.

**How much is a water taxi from St. Thomas to St. John?**

Far more than the ferry: from $495 a boat one way against $8.15 an adult on the Red Hook ferry, as of October 2026.
