# Kayaking and paddleboarding on St. John

The best kayaking on St. John is in the North Shore coves, tucked out of the trade winds, with Maho and Francis holding up best when a winter swell comes in. When the whole coast is choppy, the mangrove bays of Hurricane Hole stay flat. Join a guided paddle from Cruz Bay or Coral Bay, or rent a kayak for the week.

## Where to kayak on St. John, bay by bay

Ten places to put a kayak or a board in, west to east. The last column is our measured drive or walk from Cruz Bay; the paddling itself is yours to time.

| Where | Why paddle here | How you get there | From Cruz Bay |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cruz Bay beach | Sunset paddles past Gallows Point | On foot; the launch is beside the ferry dock | In town |
| [Honeymoon Beach](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/honeymoon-beach) | The North Shore tours' lunch stop | By kayak round Lind Point, or on foot | 17 min walk |
| [Hawksnest](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/hawksnest) | A park kayak launch, the closest to town | By car to the beach | 8 min drive |
| [Cinnamon Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/cinnamon-bay) | Kayaks and boards rent on the sand | By car to the beach | 17 min drive |
| [Maho Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/maho-bay) | Shallow, sheltered, turtles over the seagrass | By car; rentals across the road | 18 min drive |
| [Francis Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/francis-bay) | The park's calm-water beach, with a launch | By car to the beach | 25 min drive |
| [Coral Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/areas/coral-bay) harbor | Mangroves and turtle grass on a guided tour | By car, or the tour's shuttle | 28 min drive from the ferry dock |
| Hurricane Hole | Enclosed bays and red mangroves | By car on Route 10 to the Princess Bay launch | 37 min drive |
| [Haulover Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/haulover) | Reef2Peak's East End paddles start here | By car to the roadside stop | 38 min drive |
| [Salt Pond Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/salt-pond) | The south shore, out of a north swell | By car, then a 10 minute carry | 41 min drive |

The wind decides the day. The trade winds blow from the east, stronger in winter and lighter in summer, so the bays tucked into the North Shore and the west end around Cruz Bay sit in their lee, and a long paddle east along the open shore is a paddle into the wind. In winter the park warns that cold fronts can put large waves on the North Shore beaches; on those days it names Maho and Francis as the least affected, and the south shore, Salt Pond, is the other side of the island from the swell.

## Hurricane Hole and the mangroves, on your own

By car: Route 10 from Cruz Bay through Coral Bay to Estate Hermitage on the [East End](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/areas/east-end), where Virgin Islands Ecotours sends its renters to launch at Princess Bay. By our measurement the drive is 37 minutes from the Cruz Bay dock, the last of it the narrow East End road.

Hurricane Hole is four bays off Coral Bay's eastern arm, ringed with red mangroves, and the only part of the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument you can reach by land, per the National Park Service. It is the flattest water on the island on a windy day, and the reason to come is under the boat: coral growing on and around the mangrove roots, fish and sea anemones among them, and the occasional turtle or ray.

The tradeoff: you will most likely go without a guide. Virgin Islands Ecotours says on its Hurricane Hole page, read October 2026, that tours are no longer permitted there and only rentals are allowed; its St. John page also lists a full-day Hurricane Hole kayak and snorkel from $85, so ask whether that one is guided before you book. Its self-guided rental is $119 for adults 13 and over and $99 for children 7 to 12, for up to eight hours, a kayak or a paddleboard with snorkel gear, a life jacket, and foam pads and straps for your car's roof; you collect it at Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay and drive it out yourself. Reef2Peak still lists a guided snorkel from Princess Bay, booked by phone only; ask it what it can run there before you plan on one.

The monument has its own rules. Anchoring, fishing and collecting of any kind are prohibited, and its moorings are day use only. The park built the Hurricane Hole storm moorings to keep boats off the mangroves, and the compendium bars tying a vessel to vegetation or rocks; the paddler's version, by our read, is to drift alongside the roots, never grab or tie to them, and keep fins off anything growing.

## Guided kayak and kayak-snorkel tours on St. John

A guided paddle buys the gear, the launch and someone who knows where the turtles graze. Virgin Islands Ecotours, at Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay, runs most of them, and its prices below are from its own pages as of October 2026; Arawak Expeditions, the island's old kayak outfitter, has joined it.

| Tour | Starts | Length | Price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Sea Turtle Kayak & Snorkel, North Shore | Cruz Bay, two blocks from Mongoose Junction | 3 hours, ages 10+ | $119 |
| Best of St. John: Kayak, Snorkel & Beach Picnic | Cruz Bay | Full day, ages 10+ | From $159, children from $139 |
| Coral Bay Kayak, Turtles & Tacos | Coral Bay, with a shuttle from Cruz Bay | 3 hours, ages 2+ | $89 |
| Sunset Kayak, Golden Hour | Cruz Bay beach, beside the ferry dock | About 80 minutes on the water, ages 7+ | $49, ages 7 to 12 $39 |
| Reef2Peak East End Kayaking Excursion | Haulover Bay | 3 hours, ages 6+, up to 10 kayakers | By phone |

The North Shore tour paddles past Solomon, Honeymoon and Caneel to snorkel at Scott Beach, which the operator picks for its turtles; the full day goes around Lind Point with lunch at Honeymoon. The Coral Bay trip crosses the harbor past mangroves to a seagrass meadow where green turtles feed, then swims to Lime Out, the floating taco bar, where food is extra. Reef2Peak's East End paddle crosses Round Bay from Haulover to snorkel at Pelican Rock or Hidden Reef.

For boat-based snorkel trips and the operators who run them, see [St. John snorkel tours](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/experiences/snorkel-tours).

## Night kayaking at the Westin in clear kayaks

By car: 9 minutes from Cruz Bay to [Great Cruz Bay](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/areas/great-cruz-bay), where the tour meets at the Westin St. John Resort Villas on Chocolate Hole Road.

Night Kayak's St. John tour puts two people in a clear-bottom kayak lit from below and paddles the cove after dark, with glow paint and photos on the sand first. Its booking page sells it as a one hour tour at $69 a person, as of October 2026, while its tour page counts about 45 minutes on the water and half an hour on land; departures are at 7:00, 8:30 and 9:45 pm on its calendar. Children from 3 can go, with an adult in every group and someone 16 or older in each kayak. Nobody gets in the water, and the operator asks you to skip bug spray, which damages the clear hulls.

## Renting a kayak or paddleboard by the day or week

Two ways to rent: by the hour on the beach, or by the week to keep at the house.

| Where | Kayak | Paddleboard | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cinnamon Bay Resort & Campground | $30 an hour, $75 a day; clear kayak $35 an hour | $35 an hour, $75 a day | On the beach, 9 am to 4 pm; lessons $60 an hour. The campground has closed in the fall in past years, so check with it before you go |
| Reef2Peak, Maho Bay | $35 an hour, $55 for 3 hours, $80 for 6 | The same | On the beach, 10 am to 4 pm |
| Maho Watersport Rentals, Maho Crossroads | Clear kayak from $40 | Inflatable board from $30 | Across the road from Maho Bay |
| Reef2Peak, weekly | $200 a week | $250 a week | Delivery for a fee |
| Virgin Islands Ecotours, weekly | $220 single, $250 double | $200 a week | Roof pads included; pick up at Mongoose Junction or pay for delivery |

Prices are each operator's own, read October 2026, and each says they can change.

The weekly rental is the villa guest's way to paddle. A kayak strapped on the rental car's roof means the first hour at Francis Bay before the lot fills, or a calm evening off the beach below the house, with no tour times to keep. The cost is the carrying: a sit-on-top kayak on the steep roads, and at Salt Pond a ten minute walk down from the lot with it. Ask whoever rents the car whether roof straps are allowed on it, and ask the villa's owner where the nearest launch is before you book a week.

## Paddleboarding on St. John: flat water first

A board wants flatter water than a kayak, so start where the park says the water is calmest: Francis Bay, which it calls ideal for beginners, and Maho Bay next door, where Reef2Peak rents boards on the beach. Cinnamon Bay rents boards too, and gives lessons at $60 an hour as of October 2026, the only published lesson price on the island we found.

By our read, the morning is the time to stand up. The trades build through the day, and a breeze that barely ruffles a kayak pushes a board sideways along the shore. Reef2Peak's East End paddle takes boards as well as kayaks, from age 4, at up to five boards a trip; Hurricane Hole is the place to take a rented board on your own when the North Shore is choppy.

## The park's rules for kayaks and paddleboards

Most of the water you will paddle is inside [Virgin Islands National Park](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/things-to-do/national-park), and its 2026 Superintendent's Compendium, updated October 6, 2026, has one rule that names kayaks and paddleboards outright: keep 200 feet off the west side of Trunk Cay, where the underwater snorkel trail runs.

The swim areas behind the white NO BOATS buoys are closed to motor and sail, and surfing a kayak, canoe or any rigid board inside them is banned. Swimmers and snorkelers use them, so paddle wide. By our read, nothing in the compendium asks a permit of someone paddling for pleasure; a company kayak carrying paying guests counts as a commercial vessel, and that is the tour operator's permit to hold.

On the water, give the turtles at Maho room, and keep off the reef: a paddle or a fin on shallow coral breaks it, and where you step out, the park's word at Leinster Bay holds everywhere: stand only on sand.

## Which paddle to choose for your St. John trip

For a first paddle, the Cruz Bay sunset tour or an hour's rental at Maho Bay. For turtles with a guide, the North Shore kayak-and-snorkel tour from Cruz Bay, or the Coral Bay trip if the house is on that side. For a week of your own mornings, a weekly kayak and a list of the launches near the villa. And for a windy winter day, Hurricane Hole, if you are confident on your own. For snorkeling from the sand instead, the [St. John snorkeling guide](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/things-to-do/snorkeling) has every reef you can reach without a boat.
