# The Lind Point Trail from Cruz Bay

The Lind Point Trail is the hike you can start from the ferry. It climbs out of Cruz Bay behind the national park visitor center, passes a bench over the harbor and drops to two beaches, Solomon and Honeymoon. The catch is that the way back is the same rocky path, or a shuttle and a taxi.

## Where the Lind Point Trail starts in Cruz Bay

The trail starts up the stairs behind the national park visitor center at Cruz Bay Creek, an 8-minute walk from the ferry dock by our measurement. The National Park Service's directions are to turn left at the top and follow the road uphill until the trail leaves it, and the desk inside has maps. Use the restrooms there before you go: there are none at Solomon, and the concession's at Honeymoon are the next ones.

Most villa guests in Cruz Bay can walk to the start, and a day visitor off the Red Hook ferry needs neither a taxi nor a car. Drivers need a parking pass from that desk, which keeps weekday hours only (8:15 am to 4 pm Monday to Thursday, closing at 1:30 pm on Friday, on the park's hours page in October 2026). On a weekend, start a car instead at the big park sign on North Shore Road: leave it in one of the first two gravel lots and take the path between the sign and the woods, which joins the same trail.

## Upper route or lower route, and the overlook

The trail splits soon after the start, and both halves end on the sand. The lower trail runs nearer the water and reaches Solomon Beach first, by a short spur down to the sand; Honeymoon is at the end of either. The park asks walkers to follow the signs at each junction.

The upper trail is the one that climbs to the Cruz Bay Overlook, by our read of the route: a bench above the harbor where the ferries and boats to St. Thomas come and go. The park's 20 to 40 minutes, it says itself, depends on how long you sit there. Taking one route out and the other back turns the walk into a loop.

The path is narrow and rocky throughout, up and down in the park's words, so shoes with grip matter more than fitness. For the rest of the island's trails, ranked by effort, see [hiking on St. John](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/things-to-do/hiking).

## Solomon and Honeymoon at the end of the walk

Two beaches, a rocky point apart, and different days. [Solomon Beach](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/solomon), which the park writes Salomon, is the small one: tree-lined sand with shade or sun, good snorkeling along the rocky edges and nothing built or sold on it, so bring lunch and carry your trash out. It is 16 minutes on foot from the visitor center.

[Honeymoon Beach](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/beaches/honeymoon-beach), 17 minutes on the same measure, is the longer beach and the one with a concession. Caneel Bay Beach Club runs it daily, morning until sunset, selling drinks and food and renting chairs, and walkers in by the trail pay nothing to be there, on its own site as read in October 2026. The reef between the two beaches is the same one, so a snorkeler can choose by what the day needs: empty sand, or a cold drink.

No pets on either beach, by the park's rules. A leashed dog can walk the trail and has to stop where the sand begins.

## Caneel Bay and the ways back to Cruz Bay

The simplest way back is the way you came, on the other route if you want the overlook. The tradeoff: it is the same narrow, rocky trail, now with a beach day on your back, and there is no road out of either beach.

The other way back runs through Caneel Bay. The resort next to Honeymoon has been closed since the hurricanes of 2017, and the park took proposals for a new lease there until Aug 10, 2026, on its Caneel Bay page updated July 14, 2026, without naming a date for a choice. Meanwhile the beach club runs a shuttle between Honeymoon and the Caneel Bay gate every 15 minutes, $6 a person one way as of October 2026, and a taxi from the gate to Cruz Bay is $9 for one rider or $8 each for two or more on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's 2022 tariff. Walkers come in free and pay the shuttle fare like anyone else; the club sells it, so confirm a one-way ride before you count on it.

You cannot walk on along the shore from Honeymoon to Caneel Beach: when the park reopened Caneel Beach on Aug 1, 2024, it ruled out reaching Caneel from Honeymoon on foot or by trail "at this time", and the park has published nothing since that lifts it. Whoever takes the lease could change the shuttle and the concession, so check both on the day.

## What to bring for the walk to Honeymoon

Water first. The park's hiking page sets a minimum of half a gallon for every four hours of walking, and nothing on this one sells water until the concession at Honeymoon. Add a snack, loose clothing, closed shoes with grip, insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen, which is the park's own list.

The park calls this a daytime walk, and the junction signs are easier to read in daylight. Cell service is patchy on the island's trails, so tell someone where you are going, and do not walk alone. If the day is a beach day, a light bag beats a cooler: everything goes back over the same rock. For the rest of the park, from the fees to the other beaches, start at [the national park guide](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/things-to-do/national-park), and the [St. John ferry page](https://virginislandvilla.com/st-john/ferry) has the boats from Red Hook to the trailhead's doorstep.

Questions people ask

### How long is the Lind Point Trail?

The National Park Service allows 20 to 40 minutes from the Cruz Bay visitor center and gives no length on its trail page; its beach page calls the walk over a mile. Our own routed walk is 0.8 mile (1.3 km) to Solomon Beach and 0.9 mile (1.4 km) to Honeymoon Beach, one way, so call it a little under a mile, more on the rocky stretches.

### Do you need a car for the Lind Point Trail?

No. The trail starts behind the park visitor center in Cruz Bay, 8 minutes on foot from the ferry dock by our measurement. Drivers need a parking pass from the visitor center desk, open weekdays only, or a space in the gravel lots by the park sign on North Shore Road.

### Can you walk from Honeymoon Beach to Caneel Bay?

Not along the shore. The National Park Service said on Aug 1, 2024 that there is no access to Caneel Beach by trail or on foot from Honeymoon at this time. Caneel Bay Beach Club runs a shuttle from Honeymoon to the Caneel Bay gate, $6 a person one way as of October 2026.
