## Staying in Mahogany Run

Mahogany Run sits in the middle of the island's north side, and the middle is the point of it. From the center of the area, Charlotte Amalie is 20 minutes by car, Magens Bay 18 and Coki Beach 20, so a week here can run to town for dinner one night and to the beaches the next without either drive taking over the day. The name covers more ground than the golf course it comes from: our area map, built on the US Census Bureau's estate boundaries, files Lovenlund, Wintberg and Mandahl here, and the grid below shows what owners list across all three today. The golf course itself posts no current hours or operator page that we could find as of October 2026, so ask the owner what is open before you pack clubs.

Nothing here works without a car. The ground measures steep by our survey, so before you reserve a compact, put one question to the owner: what do guests drive up to this house? St. John is a longer reach from here: 30 minutes to the Red Hook terminal from the middle of the area, then a 20-minute crossing on the hourly boat. The last ferry back is 10 pm from Cruz Bay per the Department of Public Works as of September 2026, which means a St. John day ends with a half-hour drive home after dark. Cyril E. King Airport, on the far side of Charlotte Amalie, is 34 minutes, the longest drive of the week and the one you make with luggage. A taxi on that run is $18 to $21 for one person and $14 to $15 each for two or more, depending on whether the house is in Lovenlund, Wintberg, Mahogany Run or Mandahl Bay, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's 2022 tariff, the latest as of October 2026, plus $3 a bag.

Magens Bay is the nearest beach with a guide, 18 minutes from the middle of the area. Entry is $7 a person and parking $2, from 7 am to 5:30 pm, per the Magens Bay Authority as of October 2026. Coki Beach, beside Coral World Ocean Park at Coki Point, is 20 minutes. Smith Bay Park, the Authority's other beach, is 22 minutes, but sargassum has kept its gate shut since July 9, 2026, as the St. Thomas Source reported, and no reopening notice was found as of October 8, 2026. Hull Bay, the fishing-boat beach one bay west of Magens, is 23, and Sapphire Beach on the East End is 25. None of them is a walk, and none is far enough to plan the day around; the choice each morning is which one, not whether.

Mahogany Run is near everything and on top of nothing. There is no beach at the foot of the hill, no town to stroll to after dinner and no ferry dock close by, so every swim and every meal out starts with the car and a steep road down. A family that wants to walk to the sand should look at Smith Bay, on the north-east coast, where our survey measures the beach as a walk. A group that cooks in most nights and drives every day regardless gets Charlotte Amalie at 20 minutes and Magens Bay at 18, and that even split is what this hillside sells.

Suits a household that splits its week between Charlotte Amalie and Magens Bay, at an even distance from both.

## Getting around

Mahogany Run needs a car: the ground measures steep, so ask the owner about the driveway, every beach is a drive and Charlotte Amalie is 20 minutes by road.

| Drive to | Minutes |
| --- | --- |
| Red Hook ferry | 30 |
| Cyril E. King airport | 34 |
| Charlotte Amalie | 20 |
| Mandahl Bay Beach | 14 |

Measured on the island's roads.

A condominium complex in Upper Lovenlund lists an automatic generator and filtered water in a 2026 sale listing, while the houses on the Wintberg and Mandahl slopes store their own rain and have a generator only where the owner fitted one. By our read a phone that had signal on the ridge road can lose it on the north-facing slopes below, so set up wifi calling before you fly.
