# St. Thomas boat charters from Red Hook and Compass Point

A private charter from St. Thomas starts at $325 for 90 minutes on a six-seat catamaran, and most full days for six run $1,100 to $1,600, per the operators' October 2026 rates, before fuel, tip and any BVI customs fee. Most boats take up to 12 and leave from Red Hook or Compass Point on the East End; Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie is the megayacht marina.

## Where St. Thomas charter boats leave from

Most boats leave from the East End: American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook, with 123 berths per IGY Marinas, and Compass Point Marina. Yacht Haven Grande, on Charlotte Amalie harbor, has 46 megayacht berths and Customs and Immigration on site, per IGY Marinas as of October 2026; no day operator below lists it as a departure. On the west side they pick up at Havensight, the Crown Bay cruise pier or the Marriott's Frenchman's Cove dock.

Those are our measured drives. Staying west of town, ask for a pickup on your side; Over The Line notes the cruise marinas charge up to $1.50 per foot of boat for one.

## How to choose a catamaran or a powerboat charter

Start with the head count. Most private boats here take six or twelve: Over The Line prices one to six and adds $75 a guest up to 12, and Seas the Day says a 13th guest, infants included, means a second boat. For more, New Horizons II takes 18, Breakaway 32 and Stormy Pirates' power catamaran 49.

The tradeoff: the published price is rarely the day's cost. Seas the Day bills fuel at $8 a gallon, Over The Line at the day's price, and Nate's says its USVI fuel averages $350 to $400; Stormy Pirates quotes with fuel included. Seas the Day puts the customary tip at 15 to 20 percent.

## The BVI day trip: passports and customs

Every guest needs a valid passport book, or for US citizens a passport card, under the Government of the Virgin Islands release of 20 March 2025, in force since March 1, 2025. Bad Kitty Charters wants a photo of each passport's photo page 72 hours ahead and will not board anyone without one.

BVI customs is paid on the day, outside the charter price; Over The Line quotes $75 a person in cash as of October 2026, depending on the number of people and on Sundays or holidays, the operator says, and adds $300 to its rate for the crossing. Bring the passports and the cash.

## Questions about boat charters on St. Thomas

**Can you stay on a catamaran in St. Thomas?**

Not on these boats. Every operator here runs day trips back the same afternoon; Over The Line's USVI days run seven hours. Sleeping aboard is a term charter, booked for several nights, and not listed here.

**Do I need a passport for a boat trip to the BVI from St. Thomas?**

Yes. Since March 1, 2025 the Government of the Virgin Islands asks for a valid passport book, or for US citizens a passport card (its release of 20 March 2025), and Bad Kitty Charters will not board a guest without one.

**How much does a private catamaran charter cost on St. Thomas?**

On the operators' own pages as of October 2026, Seas the Day's 47-foot sailing catamaran Pisces is $1,325, and Stormy Pirates' sailing catamarans are from $1,485 with fuel included. Add the tip, and BVI customs if you cross.

**Where is Yacht Haven Grande?**

On Charlotte Amalie harbor, within walking distance of downtown, per IGY Marinas, which runs it. It berths megayachts; the day boats mostly leave from Red Hook and Compass Point.
