# St. Thomas nightlife

Written by Virgin Islands Villas · Updated Oct 9, 2026 · [How this was checked](https://virginislandvilla.com/editorial-policy)

St. Thomas nightlife gathers in two places: Red Hook on the East End, and the Charlotte Amalie harbor from Frenchtown to Yacht Haven Grande. They are 28 minutes apart by car, on the left, on hill roads, so an evening is one or the other. Below: each cluster, the drives from the villa areas, and getting home.

## Where is the nightlife in St. Thomas?

At the two ends of the south shore. Red Hook, on the East End, is the harbor where the St. John ferry docks, with the American Yacht Harbor marina village beside it. The other end is Charlotte Amalie's harbor: Frenchtown on its west side, the downtown waterfront in the middle, Yacht Haven Grande on its east side.

| Cluster | Where it sits | To Red Hook | To Charlotte Amalie |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Red Hook | East End, at the St. John ferry | here | 28 min |
| Frenchtown | West side of the harbor, flat | 34 min | 5 min |
| Charlotte Amalie waterfront | Downtown, on the harbor | 28 min | here |
| Yacht Haven Grande | East side of the harbor | not measured | a walk, per IGY Marinas |

Drive times measured September 2026, terminal to terminal and area to terminal. The table is the decision: pick the end of the island nearer the villa and stay there for the evening.

## Red Hook, by the St. John ferry

Red Hook is the busier of the two after dark. Duffy's Love Shack, at 6500 Red Hook Plaza, describes itself as a parking-lot bar, which started in Charlotte Amalie in 1995, by its own account; its site lists the kitchen from 11:30 am to 10 pm and the bar from 11:30 am with no closing time given, as of October 2026. American Yacht Harbor, the marina next to the ferry terminal, has "multiple shopping, dining, and entertainment options" in its village, per IGY Marinas, which runs it.

The villa areas around Red Hook are the closest on the island to any evening out. Nazareth measures 1 minute from the Red Hook ferry, Secret Harbour 9, Sapphire Bay and Point Pleasant 11, Smith Bay and Cabrita Point 12. That is short enough for one taxi there and one back.

## Frenchtown and the Charlotte Amalie waterfront

Frenchtown is the flat neighborhood on the west side of Charlotte Amalie's harbor, 5 minutes from downtown by car, and it has restaurants and bars. The downtown waterfront is the other half of the same evening. This page names no venue in either: none had a page of its own we could read and date in October 2026, and a venue we cannot date is one we do not send you to.

The villa areas nearest town are on the hills above the harbor and on the north side. From Bluebeard's, Charlotte Amalie is 5 minutes; from Frenchman's Bay 11; from Hull Bay and Northside 12; from Magens Bay and Peterborg 13. The tradeoff: every one of those drives back is on a hill road after dark.

## Yacht Haven Grande on the east harbor

Yacht Haven Grande is a megayacht marina at 5304 Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie Harbor, within walking distance of downtown, per IGY Marinas, which runs it. Its shops are a 120,000 square foot duty-free retail village of boutiques, restaurants and services. IGY Marinas names no restaurant or bar there and publishes no hours for them, as of October 2026, so check the one you want before you go. On a night downtown, it is the end of the waterfront you can walk to.

## How do you get home after a night out?

By taxi, or with a driver who has not been drinking. On the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff, in force since October 2022, a ride within Charlotte Amalie is $6 a person and town to Red Hook $20 for one rider or $15 each for two or more, and after midnight every rider pays $3 more until 6 am. An official taxi has a dome light and TP on its license plate, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority, which says to confirm the rate before getting in. Agree the fare to the villa before you set off, and ask the bar to call a licensed taxi if there is none at the rank.

If you drive: traffic keeps left, the CDC says to look right for approaching traffic, and its advice is plain: "Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands may be poor." It also says plainly not to drive after drinking or ride with someone who has. The 28 minutes between Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie is the measured figure on a clear road; at night, on unfamiliar hills, plan on more.

## What is the drinking age on St. Thomas?

18. A notice to bar owners from the Virgin Islands Police Department, the police district for St. Thomas and St. John, published by the Virgin Islands Department of Health on April 27, 2021, says "the legal drinking age is 18 years old" and warns that serving a minor can bring arrest, fines and the closure of the business. A guest of 18 to 20 coming from the mainland can drink legally here and not at home, which is worth settling with a family before the first evening out.

## Where to stay in St. Thomas for nightlife

On the East End, if Red Hook is the evening you want: Nazareth, Secret Harbour, Sapphire Bay and Point Pleasant are all within 11 minutes of the ferry. On the hills above town, if you want Frenchtown and the waterfront: Bluebeard's is 5 minutes from Charlotte Amalie. What you give up is the other end; from Frenchtown, Red Hook is 34 minutes. Suits a group that goes out two or three nights in a week and wants each taxi ride short.
