# Is there Uber in St. Thomas? How the taxis work

Is there Uber in St. Thomas? We found no Uber or Lyft service in October 2026. Getting around without a car means licensed taxis, shared vans and open-air safari buses, at per-person fares the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission sets by destination. On its tariff in force since October 2022, the airport to the Red Hook ferry is $23 for one rider, or $17 each for two or more.

## How St. Thomas taxis and safari buses work

A St. Thomas taxi is usually a van, and it is usually shared. Only multi-destination vans carrying 8 to 12 passengers serve Cyril E. King Airport, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority as of October 2026, so a van leaving the terminal drops each party in turn. Red Hook is 36 minutes from the terminal by our measurement, and a shared van takes longer.

The open-air safari buses are the other kind; the Virgin Islands Taxi Association runs them for up to 25 passengers. On the main roads they also run as the island's dollar rides, a flat fare per ride that the Commission sets and last raised in August 2024, per the Virgin Islands Consortium.

Two marks set a licensed taxi apart: a roof dome light and TP at the start of its plate. Without them, the Port Authority says, the car is outside the Commission's rates.

## St. Thomas taxi fares from town and the airport

Taxi rates to and from the airport and town are set by the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission and approved by the Legislature, per the Port Authority. The tariff, still the latest in October 2026, charges each passenger by destination, with a lower fare each for two or more in one party:

| To | From town, one rider | From town, 2+ each | From the airport, one rider | From the airport, 2+ each |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Charlotte Amalie | $6 within town | $6 | $11 | $9 |
| Frenchtown | $6 | $6 | $11 | $9 |
| Havensight cruise dock | $6 | $6 | $11 | $9 |
| Crown Bay | $8 | $6 | $8 | $6 |
| Frenchman's Reef | $12 | $9 | $15 | $12 |
| Bolongo Bay | $15 | $12 | $18 | $14 |
| Magens Bay | $15 | $12 | $18 | $15 |
| Coki Point | $18 | $14 | $21 | $15 |
| Red Hook | $20 | $15 | $23 | $17 |
| Sapphire Beach | $21 | $15 | $23 | $17 |
| Margaritaville | $21 | $15 | $23 | $17 |
| Ritz-Carlton | $23 | $15 | $27 | $18 |
| Secret Harbour | $23 | $15 | $27 | $18 |

From the Commission's rate card, read in October 2026. From the cruise piers the card prices Magens Bay directly: $15 for one rider from Havensight or $12 each for two or more, and $18 or $15 each from Crown Bay. The rates in the operator table above are two drivers' own, for their own rides.

## What a St. Thomas taxi adds to the fare

Each bag is $3, $6 at most for anything over 30 by 20 inches, and from midnight to 6 am every rider pays $3 more. Waiting is $2 a minute after the first five, and a round trip is two one-way fares plus the wait. A house the card does not name is charged as the nearest place it does. By the hour, a sedan or minivan for one to four is $60, a 14-seat van or safari $83, a larger safari $120; an island tour is $75 for one rider or $38 each for two hours, $90 or $45 each for three.

The tradeoff: the shared van waits to fill and drops each party in turn, and a van to yourselves costs far more. The exclusive fare from the airport to Red Hook is $135 for one to four people and $23 for each one after, against $23 a head shared. Jimmy Taxi & Limo, in the table above, publishes his own price for a private car on that run: $130 for up to four and $25 for each one after, as of October 2026.

There is no meter. The tariff must be posted in every taxi, and the Commission cites a driver who charges more or less, so check the card before the van leaves. A disputed fare goes to the Commission's St. Thomas office on 340-693-4211, with the taxi's plate number.

## Getting a taxi to and from a villa

At the airport and the cruise piers the vans wait; at a house on the hill, nobody passes. Call a dispatch line: the Virgin Islands Taxi Association, which the Port Authority lists for the airport, runs radio dispatch on 340-774-7457. A called taxi costs more than one at a rank: the fare plus a third for one rider, or $2 more each for two or more. Fix the pickup time for the ride home when you are dropped at a beach or a restaurant.

A taxi covers the arrival and a dinner in town; the Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal is 12 minutes from the airport by our measurement. Beyond that the trips add up: all 23 St. Thomas areas we measured in September 2026 came out car required or recommended.
