# Hiking in St. Thomas from the Magens Bay trailhead

The Magens Bay trailhead at Canaan is the top of the Discovery Nature Trail, the one St. Thomas trail an authority describes. The Magens Bay Authority gives it as about 1½ miles down to the beach, 1 hour 20 minutes. Its beach end is 14 minutes by car from Charlotte Amalie. Below: the car and the heat.

## Is there hiking in St. Thomas?

Yes, but less than the island's hills suggest, and only one trail is described by the body that runs it. That is the Discovery Nature Trail at Magens Bay, managed by the Magens Bay Authority, which gives it as about 1½ miles and about 1 hour 20 minutes as of October 2026.

Everything else a reader may have heard of has no official description we could find on 9 October 2026, so this page does not rank it. The tradeoff of hiking here, against St. John next door, is that St. Thomas has one trail described by a public owner, where the National Park Service puts almost 58 percent of St. John's land inside the national park.

## Where the Magens Bay trailhead is

There are two ends. The upper Magens Bay trailhead is at Canaan, off Magens Bay Road on the ridge above the bay; the lower one is at the west end of Magens Bay beach, inside the park. The Authority's own advice is to start at the top, where a wooden platform looks over the bay, and walk down.

The Authority describes the route as mixed dry forest at the top, moist tropical forest lower down, then a boardwalk through mangroves before the sand. It counts 263 species of native and migratory birds on the island, which is why its trail page starts the walk with birdwatching from the platform. Interpretive signs along the way name the plants and the wildlife, per the Authority's Earth Day post of April 2025.

## The Magens Bay hike is one way: plan the car

The Discovery Nature Trail is not a loop. Start at Canaan as the Authority suggests and you finish on the beach with the car 1½ miles back up the hill; the Authority publishes no shuttle. Three ways to settle it before you set off: two cars, one at each end; a driver who drops you at Canaan and collects you at the beach; or walking back up the way you came, which turns a 1 hour 20 minute descent into a longer climb.

Starting from the beach and walking up first is the other choice. It puts the climb at the start, when you are fresh, and the drive home leaves from the beach lot, 14 minutes by car from Charlotte Amalie as we measured it.

## What the park charges a walker, and when it opens

The park is open 7 am to 5:30 pm every day, on the Magens Bay Authority's current site as of October 2026; a 2025 post of its own gave 8 to 5. It posts no separate hours for the trail. A walk that starts at 7 am is on the sand by about 8:20 at the Authority's pace.

It is $7 a non-resident and $2 to park at the gate, per the passes page. The Authority does not say whether a walker who comes down from Canaan pays the day fee, and its FAQ leaves the amounts blank, so call it on 340-777-6300 before you count on walking in free.

## Heat and water on a St. Thomas trail

Carry more water than the walk seems to need. The National Park Service's rule for its trails next door on St. John is half a gallon for every four hours of hiking, at the least, with snacks, sturdy shoes, insect repellent in the rainy months, and the warning that many trails have little or no phone signal.

The heat changes less by month than visitors expect. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) 1991 to 2020 normals for Cyril E. King Airport put the average high at 84°F in January and February and 90°F in July and August, so an August walk runs about six degrees warmer than a January one, and the water rule matters all year.

## Trails no authority describes

Three more names come up when people ask about hiking on St. Thomas. None has a trail described by its owner as of 9 October 2026, so each is listed here for what is known, not ranked.

Hassel Island, in Charlotte Amalie Harbor, is reached only by water. The National Park Service holds land on the island as part of the Virgin Islands National Park, but no live page of the park's describes a trail there or where to land, so we do not.

Brewers Bay is a beach, 13 minutes by car from Charlotte Amalie as we measured it. People ask about a hike at Brewers Bay; no authority publishes a trail there.

The St. Thomas East End Reserves appear on the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' parks page as a marine protected area, with no trail.

The one thing to remember: the Discovery Nature Trail ends at the beach, and your car does not.
