# Snorkeling on St. Thomas, USVI

Snorkeling on St. Thomas, USVI, splits in two: reefs you drive to and swim out to from the sand, and four stops only a boat reaches. Beach reefs are free to enter, and the nearest good one, Hull Bay, is 12 minutes from Charlotte Amalie by car. Below: every beach scored, the boat stops, and the days to stay out.

## Does St. Thomas have good snorkeling from shore?

Yes, at six beaches, and none of them needs a boat, though Lindquist has been closed for sargassum since July 9, 2026. We score every written St. Thomas beach page from 1 to 5 on one rubric, our read of the reef, the swim out and the entry, and six reach a 4: Coki, Sapphire, Secret Harbour, Lindquist, Hull Bay and Brewers Bay. None reaches a 5, which needs coral most accounts call excellent a short swim from the sand and a protected way in.

| Beach | Score | How you get there | Drive from Charlotte Amalie |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Coki | 4 | Car to the lot, swim out | 20 minutes |
| Sapphire | 4 | Car to the lot, swim right | 23 minutes |
| Secret Harbour | 4 | Taxi, no public lot, wade in | 27 minutes |
| Hull Bay | 4 | Car to the ramp, swim along the rock | 12 minutes |
| Brewers Bay | 4 | Car, roadside parking, wade in | 13 minutes |
| Lindquist | 4 | Car to the park lot; closed since July 9, 2026 | 21 minutes |
| Bolongo | 3 | Car to the resort | 14 minutes |
| Limetree | 3 | Car, rocky entry | 14 minutes |
| Honeymoon, Water Island | 3 | Ferry from Crown Bay, 5-minute walk | 9 minutes to Crown Bay |
| Magens Bay | 3 | Car to the park lot | 14 minutes |
| Morningstar | 2 | Car or taxi | 11 minutes |
| Vessup | 2 | Car, wade in over sand | 27 minutes |

Drives measured on the road network on October 5, 2026; scores and access from each beach page, checked October 2026. Vessup Beach scores 2: sea grass and sand and no reef in any account, so it is a swimming beach.

## From the beach: where to snorkel without a boat

Coki Beach, by car, 20 minutes from Charlotte Amalie to the lot beside Coral World Ocean Park. You are over reef and among fish within a few strokes of standing depth, and the vendors on the sand rent masks and fins, so a family can start here with nothing packed. Parking is the catch: few spaces, and a charge for each. Coki Dive Center says on its own site that it no longer operates here, as of October 2026, so do not count on a dive shop on the sand.

Sapphire Beach, by car, 23 minutes from Charlotte Amalie, or 4 from the Red Hook ferry terminal. Face the water and swim right: the reef and the fish are on the rocky eastern point, and the VI Department of Tourism counts Sapphire among its nine snorkeling sites in the territory, one of three on St. Thomas. Walk in over sand near the middle, because the right-hand ledge is rock underfoot. The department also warns that monitors patrol the coral here and will blow a whistle at a snorkeler who gets too close. Sapphire Beach Club rents a snorkel and mask for $15 a day as of October 2026.

Secret Harbour, 27 minutes from Charlotte Amalie and 6 from the Red Hook ferry terminal, with no public lot: the resort tells day visitors to come by taxi. Entry is a gentle incline over sand, the easiest wade-in of the five. The two businesses on the beach rate it highly, and no independent authority rates the reef, so weigh the 4 with that in mind. Aqua Action Dive Center rents a full set for $25 a day as of October 2026.

Hull Bay, by car, 12 minutes from Charlotte Amalie: the nearest of the five. The fish are along the rock off the western point, not over the sand in the middle where the fishing boats moor. Expect to swim a stretch of rocky edge in open water before the good part, with nowhere sandy to stand and rest. No restrooms and no lifeguard.

Brewers Bay, by car, 13 minutes from Charlotte Amalie and 8 from Cyril E. King Airport. Its 4 is for sea turtles over sand and seagrass, not for coral: the floor is mostly sand. The University of the Virgin Islands, next door, reminds visitors that touching or holding a sea turtle without a federal permit is against the law.

Magens Bay, by car, 14 minutes from Charlotte Amalie, scores 3. It is a swimming beach with a $7 entry per the Magens Bay Authority as of October 2026, and the fish are at the rocky ends, not across the sandy middle. Pack masks before you leave: the Beach Club does not rent them as of October 2026.

## By boat only: Christmas Cove, Buck Island, Cas Cay, Hassel Island

Four of the stops people ask about cannot be reached from a road. Who runs day charters to them is a separate list from this page, a charter directory that is not yet written; until it is, ask your host which captain they send guests to. The reserve rules for the East End, what may not be taken and where a boat may anchor, are the subject of our St. Thomas diving page.

Christmas Cove is a charter anchorage off Great St. James, off the East End of St. Thomas, named by the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) as a favored snorkel site (its 2011 plan). It lies in the St. James reserve, one of three in the St. Thomas East End Reserves.

Buck Island is a national wildlife refuge, the whole 45-acre island, set aside in 1969 for migratory birds. The US Fish and Wildlife Service says the refuge is closed to the public, with no visitor facilities, and that its boundary stops at sea level, as of October 2026. The snorkeling is in the water around it, from a boat; nobody lands.

Cas Cay sits off the south-east shore in the Cas Cay and Mangrove Lagoon reserve, named by DPNR as a favored snorkel site (its 2011 plan).

Hassel Island lies across Charlotte Amalie harbor, and the National Park Service says the park owns 122 acres of it, 90 percent of the island, as of October 2026. The park's snorkeling page covers St. John's beaches only, so there is no park guidance for the water off Hassel.

## Swell, rain and sargassum: the days to stay out

Winter swell decides the north side. The National Park Service notes that a north swell stirs up St. John's North Shore bays and cuts the visibility, and on St. Thomas Hull Bay, which faces north, turns into a surf beach when one runs. On a swell day, look south: Secret Harbour, Bolongo and Limetree sit on the south side of the island, away from it.

After heavy rain, give the water a day and read the weekly beach advisory first. Sargassum also closes gates: the Magens Bay Authority shut Lindquist Beach from July 9, 2026, until further notice, and our Lindquist page found no reopening notice by October 8. Call 340-777-6300 before you drive there.

## Reef rules: sunscreen and the coral

The National Park Service asks for reef-safe sunscreen and then explains why the label is not enough: no regulation governs what a maker prints on the bottle. Read the ingredients instead and leave behind anything with oxybenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, butylparaben or 4-methylbenzylidine camphor, which the park says cause coral bleaching even at low levels.

Keep hands, knees and fins off the coral. Bolongo Bay's resort asks snorkelers not to touch or stand on the reef in its bay, and at Sapphire the VI Department of Tourism's monitors are there for the same reason.

Questions people ask

**Where is the best snorkeling in St. Thomas?**

Ranked by what the sources say about the water, the shore reefs at Coki and Sapphire come first: Coki's reef starts a short swim off the sand, and the VI Department of Tourism names Sapphire among nine snorkeling sites in the territory. For an easy wade-in, Secret Harbour. For turtles over seagrass, Brewers Bay. Coki is 20 minutes from Charlotte Amalie by car, Sapphire 23.

**Can you snorkel at Magens Bay?**

Yes, at the rocky ends of the beach; the middle is sand. Entry is $7 a person, under 12 free and $2 to park, per the Magens Bay Authority as of October 2026, and the park is open 7 am to 5:30 pm. Bring your own mask, and swim near a staffed lifeguard stand: the Authority lists lifeguards and publishes no hours.

**Is Magens Bay good for snorkeling?**

Some, at the ends: we score it 3 of 5. The Magens Bay Authority describes a calm sandy bottom with reef fish, which means the rocky ends, and the long sandy middle has little to see. Hull Bay, 12 minutes from Charlotte Amalie, has more to see along its rocks.
