Outdoor showers

You come up from the water, rinse off outside, and the rooms indoors stay for sleeping. That is the week these houses share, and it is why they sit together on one list. Every house here has a shower outside by its owner's own listing.

What the list cannot tell you is what kind of shower it is. Some are a rinse beside the pool, a single tap and a hook for a towel. Others are a whole bathroom without a roof, with a door and a stone floor. The listing records only that the house has one, so the gallery on each villa page is where you see which kind you are getting, and the owner can tell you the rest.

Two things are worth asking about: privacy and water. A shower in the open is only as private as the walls around it and the house next door, and every gallon it uses comes from the same supply as the kitchen tap. On an island where a house off the public water line stores its own rain, a long rinse after every swim is a question of the cistern as much as of comfort, and an owner who lives with one knows exactly how far it goes in a dry month.

How a house gets on this list

Three questions for the shower outside

Whether there is hot water outside or only cold, since a cold rinse is welcome after the beach and less so after dark. Whether the shower looks onto a neighbor's deck or a road below, and which side of the house it is on. And how the house is supplied with water: the villa page shows a cistern among the amenities where the owner has listed one.

Many houses here are not on the public water line and store their own rain in a cistern under the house, built to rules the Virgin Islands Code sets out in title 29, section 308. An owner on a cistern can tell you how the water holds up in a dry spell, and whether they ever have water trucked in.

Questions about Outdoor showers

Is an outdoor shower on a villa private?

As private as its walls and its position. Some are enclosed on four sides with a door; some are a showerhead on an open deck. The listing says only that the house has one, so look at the gallery on the villa page and ask the owner which way it faces and whether a neighbor's deck or the road can see it.

Do outdoor showers have hot water?

Some do and some are cold only, and the listing does not say which: it records the shower, not the tap. A rinse by the pool and a full bathroom without a roof are both an outdoor shower on the amenity list. Write to the owner and ask, if a hot shower after dark matters to you.

Why does water matter at a Virgin Islands villa?

Many houses store their own rain. A house off the public water line keeps it in a cistern, built to rules in the Virgin Islands Code, title 29, section 308, and the cistern is the same supply as the kitchen tap, so ask the owner how it holds up in a dry month.
