Stay east, around Red Hook and the East End, for the ferry to St. John; stay west, near Frenchtown and Charlotte Amalie, for the airport and the restaurants in town. The Northside sits above Hull Bay, 26 minutes from the airport by car.

Do I need a car on St. Thomas?

For most houses, yes. In Frenchtown, Charlotte Amalie, Nazareth and Red Hook a car is useful rather than essential; every other area of the island needs one, and Red Hook and the Northside sit on steep ground.
