Bring the dog

A week away is easier when the dog comes too, and on these islands the house matters more than usual, because much of the week happens on the deck and in the yard. These are the houses whose owners take pets. Some say yes outright; others say yes once you have written to them, and each villa page says which.

The list fills from what each owner states on the listing, nothing more. It cannot tell you whether a particular house suits your particular dog: a deck above a steep drop, a pool without a fence or a long stair from the parking may be fine for one dog and wrong for another. That is a question for the owner, and it is the reason the first message matters.

The catch is the beach. On St. John, dogs are not allowed on the beaches of Virgin Islands National Park, so a dog's week there is the house, the trails and the road, and on the park's trails a dog is welcome on a leash no longer than six feet. The dog also needs paperwork before it flies: a health certificate from an accredited vet, issued within ten days of landing, and a current rabies shot.

How a house gets on this list

What to tell the owner when you write

Give the owner the dog before you give the dates: the breed, the weight, the age, whether it swims and whether it will be left alone in the house while you are out. An owner who allows pets with approval is deciding on exactly those facts. Then ask what you need to know back: whether the yard or the pool is fenced, how many steps lead from the parking to the door, whether there is a pet fee or deposit, and whether the furniture is off limits.

Ask where the owner's own guests walk their dogs. Off the park's beaches, the answer is local knowledge, and the owner is the person on this page who has it.

Questions about Bring the dog

Can I take my dog to the beach on St. John?

Not to the National Park beaches. The National Park Service does not allow pets on the beaches of Virgin Islands National Park, and in the park a dog must be on a leash no longer than six feet and may not be left tied up alone. Leashed dogs are allowed on the park's trails. The park's pet page was last updated in August 2017 and still stood as of October 2026.

What does a dog need to fly into the US Virgin Islands?

As of October 2026, per the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, a dog from the US mainland or Puerto Rico needs a health certificate from an accredited vet issued within 10 days of arrival, showing a current rabies vaccination with its date, product and lot number. Email it to the department's veterinary services at least one business day before you land. A first rabies shot must be 10 days old on arrival. No permit is needed.

What does pets allowed with approval mean on a villa page?

It means the owner takes pets but decides case by case, usually on the size of the dog and how it behaves in a house. Write before you book with the breed, weight and age, and wait for the yes in writing. A house marked as allowing pets outright still deserves the same message, so the owner knows a dog is coming.
