Magens Bay, St. Thomas

Magens Bay, St. Thomas, is the low shore and the estates behind the public beach park on the north side, the one area on our map where that beach is a walk. It suits a family who want one beach, on foot. Charlotte Amalie is a 13-minute drive from the middle of the area.

Staying in Magens Bay

In Magens Bay the beach is the short walk and everything else is a drive. From the middle of the area the sand is about 3 minutes on foot by our measurement, and the ground there measures flat. Our area map, built on the US Census Bureau's estate boundaries, files St. Joseph and Rosendal, Canaan and Sherpenjewel, Louisenhoj, Zufriedenheit and Heerleins Buy here, so the name covers the estates inland of the bay as well as the shore. The flat reading belongs to the middle, near the water. Before you choose a rental car, ask the owner how the road to their own house runs.

A house beside a beach park is not a house on an open beach. The Magens Bay Authority opens the park at 7 am and closes it at 5:30 pm every day, per its FAQ as of October 2026, and that page says nothing about entry outside those hours. The swim at first light or after dinner that a house this close seems to promise is not one the park offers. The shoreline itself is public under the Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Act, per the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, but that department's public access page names no access point on this shore. If a house has its own way down to the water, the owner is the person to say so and where it comes out. Inside park hours the fee, the facilities and the rules are the Authority's, and our Magens Bay beach page sets them out.

Keep a car for the whole week. Charlotte Amalie is 13 minutes from the middle of the area, Cyril E. King Airport 27 and the Red Hook ferry terminal 29, at the far east end of the island. By taxi, the airport run to Magens Bay costs $18 for one person or $15 each for two or more on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff in force since October 2022, plus $3 a bag. From Red Hook the boat to Cruz Bay leaves hourly and crosses in 20 minutes, and the last one back leaves Cruz Bay at 10 pm per the Department of Public Works as of September 2026. A day on St. John from here costs close to an hour on the road before the boats are counted.

The next beaches are all drives, and the bay is the reason to be here. Hull Bay, one bay to the west, is 16 minutes by car from the middle of the area, Coki Beach 18 and Sapphire Beach, out on the East End, 23. Lindquist Beach at Smith Bay Park measures 20 minutes on the map and is closed in practice: sargassum led the Magens Bay Authority to shut it on July 9, 2026, per the St. Thomas Source, and we found no reopening as of October 8, 2026. Morningstar Beach and Brewers Bay, on the south shore, are 24 minutes each.

What a house here gives up is the bay to yourself. The Authority's FAQ warns that the beach fills when cruise ships arrive, and the middle of the area, 3 minutes away on foot, shares those days with it; the ferry and the airport are each close to half an hour off. For one beach, reached on foot and swum every day, the cost is small. A couple set on an evening swim should ask the owner about the water below the house before booking, and a group planning several St. John days should look at the East End, where the ferry is closer.

Suits a family who will swim at Magens Bay every day on foot and drive for everything else.

Measured on the island's roads.

Phones hold a good signal at Magens Bay, one of the spots the Naval Postgraduate School measured as consistently good in its 2023 study, and the estates behind the beach store rain in cisterns. A generator is a question for each owner, since houses on the north side went through the same rotating outages as the rest of the island in 2026.
