Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the US Virgin Islands, the harbor town on the south coast of St. Thomas, between the cruise docks at Havensight and Crown Bay. It suits a short stay with the town on foot and the beaches by car. From the middle of the area, Cyril E. King airport is 15 minutes by car.
Staying in Charlotte Amalie
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas is a working capital first and a holiday base second. The streets behind the waterfront are the Charlotte Amalie Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976 and roughly bounded by the harbor and by Government and Berg hills, as the National Park Service has it. Fort Christian, on its rocky point in the bay, was built between 1672 and 1678 and named for Christian V of Denmark, in the St. Thomas Historical Trust's history. The street names are still Danish, because Denmark held the island until Transfer Day, March 31, 1917.
Staying here means the town on foot by day and every beach by car. The hills behind the waterfront are climbed by step streets, which the Trust explains were laid out as roads by planners in Denmark and built as flights of steps because the slopes were too steep for horse-drawn traffic; it finished restoring the one at Bred Gade in June 2024. Away from the steps, our measurement puts the ground of the area as a whole at rolling, which is gentler than the step streets suggest. The Virgin Islands Port Authority owns the Austin "Babe" Monsanto Marine Terminal at Crown Bay and publishes its cruise schedule; the Havensight dock belongs to the West Indian Company Limited, which publishes its own, per the Port Authority as of October 2026. Read both before you plan a day in town.
Rent a car. From the middle of the area, Cyril E. King airport is 15 minutes by car and the Red Hook ferry terminal, where the boats to St. John leave all year, is 29 minutes across the island. From Charlotte Amalie town, Crown Bay Marina is 9 minutes by car. The waterfront has a St. John boat of its own, from the Edward Wilmoth Blyden IV Marine Terminal to Cruz Bay: Transportation Services of St. John runs it twice a day each way as of October 2026, while Varlack Ventures' sailings on the route stop for the off-season, so read the schedule before you plan a day across from town. A taxi between the airport and town is $11 for one person or $9 each for two or more, and a ride within town limits $6 a person, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff in force since October 2022, plus $3 a bag.
Every beach with a guide on this site is a drive. From the middle of the area, Morningstar Beach, Brewers Bay and Hull Bay are each 12 minutes by car, Magens Bay 13, over the hill to the north shore, and Limetree Beach and Bolongo Bay 14; its own page carries the fee and the hours. Coki Beach is 20 minutes east. Sapphire Beach, on the East End, is 24 minutes, which is worth knowing because one map label puts a Sapphire Beach near town.
The tradeoff is the sand. No beach with a guide here is in walking distance, so a week in town is a week of short drives, the nearest of them 12 minutes away. St. John is on the far side: the hourly boats leave from Red Hook, 29 minutes from the middle of the area, and the waterfront boat sails only twice a day. For a few nights near the airport and the old town, stay here, and read the two cruise schedules before you choose your beach days.
Suits a short first visit, a stay built around the harbor and the history, and anyone flying in late who wants the airport close.
Getting around
Plan on a car in Charlotte Amalie: the roads roll rather than climb, every beach is a drive and the ferry is 29 minutes by road.
| Drive to | Minutes |

| Red Hook ferry | 29 |
| Cyril E. King airport | 15 |
| Morningstar Beach | 12 |
Measured on the island's roads.
Town houses can draw on the Water and Power Authority's mains as well as a cistern, and the cistern is the one to count on, since a break in the mains can leave whole neighborhoods dry for days. Signal is strong across town, as a 2023 Naval Postgraduate School study measured, and the island's rotating power outages of 2026 reached town as well, so ask about a generator.
