Brewers Bay Beach on Tortola

Brewers Bay is the quiet snorkeling beach on Tortola's north shore, one headland east of Cane Garden Bay: a strip of sand at the head of a deep inlet, with reef off both ends and a single beach bar. The catch is the way down, a road of tight switchbacks, and a winter swell that can close the bay.

Conditions: Calm in summer, with reef reached from the sand. The inlet opens north-northwest, so from about November to March a north or northwest swell runs down it, clouds the water and on a big day closes the bay, by our read of the map. No lifeguard.

Conditions today at Brewers Bay

Sheltered. The swell is from the east-southeast at 0.7 m, period 6 seconds; Brewers Bay opens northwest, so the bay sits in the lee.

Routes to Brewers Bay

About 18 minutes by car from Road Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.

The switchback road down to Brewers Bay

By car, down a road that earns the bay its quiet. From Road Town you climb to Ridge Road, then drop toward the north shore in tight switchbacks, steep by the map, past the Mount Healthy windmill, to where Brewer's Bay Road meets the sand. From the Road Town ferry terminal it is 14 minutes. A sedan manages it; take the bends slowly. Driving is on the left.

No lot is mapped, and people park along the road at the head of the beach. Without a car, a taxi from Road Town is the way; agree the fare and the return time first, because nobody at the beach will call one.

Brewers Bay beach: one bar and a quiet inlet

It is quiet, green and plain. The sand runs along the head of a deep, narrow inlet with trees behind it, and on most days few people are on it. The charter fleets keep their boats out by their own rules, wary of cables on the seabed and the bay's exposure to a north swell, so no mooring field fills in the afternoon the way it does next door at Cane Garden Bay.

Nicole's Beach Bar is the one business on the sand, and the one that came back after the 2017 hurricanes: drinks and food, restrooms, chairs and snorkel gear to rent. It posts no hours online as of October 2026. There was once a campground at Brewers Bay; nothing current is published and no booking line could be found, so do not plan a night on it. Ruins of an old sugar works stand beside the beach road, and on the way down, Mount Healthy National Park keeps the last windmill in the British Virgin Islands, an 18th-century mill of field rubble protected since 1983, per the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands.

The tradeoff: the bar is all there is. Bring water and lunch in case it is shut, and shop in Road Town on the way over the ridge.

Snorkeling from both ends of the sand

Yes, from the sand, which is the reason to make the drive. Reef and rocks reach out from both ends of the beach and in front of the bar, and the coral and the fish are good; we rate it 4 of 5. Swim out from either end and follow the rocks along the shore.

The season decides the day. The inlet runs deep toward the north-northwest, by our read from the map, so from roughly November to March a north or northwest swell runs straight down it, clouds the water and on a big day closes the bay to swimming. There is no lifeguard. On those days the Department of Disaster Management's high-surf advisories tell bathers to use a lifeguarded or sheltered southern beach instead; on a flat summer morning the water here is as easy as any on the island. In October 2019 the beach was tested and reopened with Cane Garden Bay after storm runoff had closed both. Brewers Bay suits snorkelers and a couple or a small family who would rather have reef than a row of bars.

Questions people ask about Brewers Bay

Is Brewers Bay in Tortola or St. Thomas?

Two beaches share the name. This Brewers Bay is on Tortola's north coast in the British Virgin Islands, one headland east of Cane Garden Bay, with reef and a single beach bar. St. Thomas's Brewers Bay sits by Cyril E. King Airport in the US Virgin Islands and has its own page.

How far is Brewers Bay from Road Town?

18 minutes by car from the middle of Road Town to the sand, by our measurement, over Ridge Road and down the switchbacks; 14 from the Road Town ferry terminal. From the middle of the bay back to Road Town's center it is 15, and the airport on Beef Island is 34.

Is Brewers Bay good for snorkeling?

Yes, 4 of 5 by our read: reef and rocks run out from both ends of the beach and in front of the bar, all reached from the sand. The drawback is the north and northwest swell, roughly November to March, which stirs the water and on a big day closes the bay; there is no lifeguard.

Are there facilities at Brewers Bay beach?

One bar: Nicole's Beach Bar, with food, drinks, restrooms and chairs and snorkel gear to rent, and no hours online as of October 2026. There was once a campground, but nothing current is published and no booking line could be found, so do not plan a night on it.
