Cane Garden Bay
Cane Garden Bay beach is the Tortola most people picture: a crescent of sand on the north coast, bars and beach chairs along it, charter boats on the moorings and green hills behind. It is the one beach on the island with a strip of bars along the sand, and it shares them with everyone, cruise-ship taxis included.
Conditions: Flat inside the reef for much of the year. The bay opens west-northwest, so a winter northwest swell, roughly November to March, brings a shore break that closes the swimming, by our read of the map. After heavy rain the ghut runs into the bay. No lifeguard.

Routes to Cane Garden Bay
About 22 minutes by car from Road Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.
Getting to Cane Garden Bay over the ridge
By car over the ridge. From Road Town the road climbs to Ridge Road and drops in switchbacks to the north shore, and the beach road runs along the back of the sand at the bottom. From the Road Town ferry terminal it is 19 minutes; from West End, where the Red Hook boats land, a few minutes more. Driving is on the left.
No public lot is mapped. Cars park along the beach road and at the businesses, and on a ship day the verges fill early. Without a car, a taxi from either terminal is the way; agree the fare and the pickup time before the driver leaves.
The bars along Cane Garden Bay beach
Cane Garden Bay is busy, sociable and easy. The sand curves around a deep bay with the bars along its back: Rhythm + Sands, the new name on Quito's, which Quito Rymer founded in 1983; Myett's, on the sand since 1992 by its own site; Rhymer's, the Paradise Club and the Elm Beach Bar. By every account vendors rent chairs and umbrellas, someone rents kayaks and paddleboards, and the bars' restrooms serve their customers. No rental prices are posted, so ask before you sit down.
Across the road at the west end, the Callwood family's Arundel distillery still makes rum in a pot still; a tour with tastings is $5 per Callwood Cane Rum as of October 2026.
The tradeoff: this is the beach the island tours come to. On a day with ships at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park in Road Town, taxis come over the ridge from mid-morning until the ships sail in the afternoon, by our read of the port's timetables, and charter boats fill the moorings by late afternoon. The BVI Ports Authority publishes the month's cruise calls; keep the quiet days for the sand.
Swimming at Cane Garden Bay, and the winter swell
For most of the year the water inside the reef lies flat, and the swim is as easy as any on Tortola. The bay opens west-northwest toward Jost Van Dyke, by our read from the map, so the headlands turn away most of what the Atlantic sends. The exception is the northwest swell of winter, roughly November to March, which runs straight in: on those days the shore break closes the swimming, and the charter boats leave. The same big swells wake a right-hand break on the reef that expert surfers ride on a handful of winter days, over shallow coral; it is no place to learn.
There is no lifeguard. After heavy rain the ghut at the back of the bay runs into the sea. In September 2019 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour closed the beach for a week on high bacterial counts after Tropical Storm Karen, and in February 2025 the Government of the Virgin Islands awarded the second phase of the bay's new sewer network, with no completion date published as of October 2026. Our read: give the water two days after a storm.
We rate the snorkeling 2 of 5: sand, and rocks with a few fish at the west end. For a morning with a mask, drive one bay east to Brewers Bay.
When Cane Garden Bay is at its quietest
On a day with no ship in Road Town, and early on any day. The sand is calm before the taxis arrive in the middle of the morning, and again once the ships sail in the afternoon, when the bars fill with people from the boats instead. Read the BVI Ports Authority's cruise calls the week you go, plan the beach for the empty days, and give a ship day to Brewers Bay. Cane Garden Bay suits a party that wants a swim, lunch on the sand and a band within a walk, and will share all three.

Is Cane Garden Bay beach free?
Yes, $0: no authority charges for or manages the beach as of October 2026. You pay for what you use: the vendors' chairs and umbrellas, whose prices are not posted, and the bars, of which only Rhythm + Sands publishes hours, 9 am to 10 pm daily.

22 minutes by car from the middle of Road Town to the sand, over Ridge Road, by our measurement; 19 from the Road Town ferry terminal and 22 from the West End ferry terminal. From the middle of the bay back to Road Town's center it is 17.
Is it safe to swim at Cane Garden Bay?
Most of the year, yes: the water inside the reef is flat. There is no lifeguard, and a northwest swell from roughly November to March brings a shore break that closes it. After heavy rain the ghut runs into the bay, which closed the beach for a week in September 2019; give the water two days after a storm.
Can you surf at Cane Garden Bay?
On a handful of winter days, and only if you are an expert: a big swell wakes a right-hand break over shallow reef, by every surf account we read. The rest of the year the bay is flat. Josiah's Bay, on the north-east shore, is the island's surf beach in a winter swell.
