Ferries between the British Virgin Islands

Almost every ferry between the British Virgin Islands starts on Tortola. Speedy's crosses to Virgin Gorda from Road Town and from Trellis Bay beside the airport, New Horizon runs from West End to Jost Van Dyke through the day, and Smith's Ferry reaches Anegada on set dates only. The catch is how early most boats stop, so plan the day around the last sailing back.

Ferries into the BVI from St. Thomas and St. John

Four routes cross from the US islands, and two of them belong to the St. Thomas to Tortola ferry page, which carries their rotation, timetable and fees in full:

Charlotte Amalie to Spanish Town, Virgin GordaSpeedy'sSaturdays, paused each autumn

Speedy's Saturday boat usually restarts in early November after its autumn pause; check with Speedy's before you plan on it. Every one of these is an international crossing: a passport book or US passport card for every visitor, a $10 levy on arrival and a $20 departure tax by sea as of October 2026, which the getting-there page adds up. Once you are in, every boat on the rest of this page stays inside one country, with no border at either end.

BVI ferry schedule and fares between the islands

Three operators and one resort launch cover every crossing inside the BVI. Each row is from the operator's own page, read on October 16, 2026:

Speedy's Sunday Road Town boats are two each way, at times its page does not pair clearly, so check them before a Sunday crossing. The BVI Tourist Board's ferry page has a low-season timetable in force through October, and the regular one usually returns in early November, so a time here can move by a few minutes or a sailing; confirm with the operator the week you travel.

From the ferry jetty to the beach

Most jetties sit a short drive from where the day is going, and Great Harbour's is a walk from White Bay if you do not mind the hill. The drives without traffic, by our measurement:

Road Town or Trellis Bay for Virgin Gorda?

Trellis Bay, if you are coming off a flight or staying at the east end. The dock is a short walk from the terminal on Beef Island, its boats run every day into the evening and later still on weekends, and Bitter End Yacht Club's directions put the crossing at about 30 minutes. Road Town suits a house in town or on the north shore, but its boats stop sooner: the last leaves at 6 pm on weekdays and 4:30 pm on Saturdays, and the last Saturday boat back from Spanish Town goes at 3:30 pm.

Where the sources part: Speedy's own page runs the extra 12:10 pm and 6 pm boats Monday to Friday; the BVI Tourist Board's page gives the 6 pm on Fridays only and also lists Road Town Fast Ferry on the route, which posts no Virgin Gorda times on its own site as of October 2026. We print Speedy's. Off the boat in Spanish Town, the Baths are a short drive from the jetty.

North Sound by way of Spanish Town

North Sound is reached through Spanish Town. We found no public scheduled boat from Tortola to North Sound posted by any operator as of October 2026, and Bitter End Yacht Club's own directions send guests on Speedy's to Spanish Town, then by taxi over the ridge road to Gun Creek. From there the resort's boat crosses to Bitter End in 7 to 10 minutes, about hourly from morning until late at night, the late runs at the captain's call; the resort calls it complimentary for arriving guests and gives no fare for anyone else. A villa on the sound's road-reached shore keeps its car and skips the boat.

Tortola to Jost Van Dyke on New Horizon

New Horizon Ferry is the Jost Van Dyke boat, from the West End terminal at Soper's Hole to Great Harbour through the day, with one fare and no separate child rate on its page. Coming from Road Town, allow for the drive west: a Road Town morning needs a 7:15 am start for the 8 am boat. On the far side, White Bay is over the hill from the jetty, a short drive or a real climb on foot.

The tradeoff: the last boat back to Tortola leaves Great Harbour at 5 pm, so an evening on Jost Van Dyke means a night there or a water taxi. New Horizon keeps its office at Great Harbour, open daily 9 am to 5 pm, and runs a Wednesday boat to Virgin Gorda in season, on the Tourist Board's page.

The Anegada ferry sails on set dates

Smith's Ferry sails from Road Town to Anegada on the dates it publishes and only those. Its calendar usually lists Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with gaps in the quiet weeks, so check the dates before you plan the day; the boat goes out early and mid-afternoon, comes back the same day, and asks for check-in 35 minutes before. The Tourist Board's page adds a call at Virgin Gorda each way, so ask Smith's whether yours stops. Road Town Fast Ferry lists the same three days as a seasonal run with no times or fares posted as of October 2026.

The ferry lands at Setting Point, a short drive from the north shore beaches, so a day trip on the 7 am boat buys the afternoon at Cow Wreck Beach or Loblolly Bay and the 5 pm boat home. Anegada is not a port of entry: a boat from the US islands clears in at Road Town first.
