Little Bay on Tortola
Little Bay on Tortola is a small cove on the north-east shore, the next bay east of Lambert Beach, with boulders at one end, sea grapes at the other and usually nobody in between. It suits a quiet swim on a calm day. The catch is the road in, a lane the map records as unpaved, and a winter sea that turns rough.
Conditions: Calm on most summer days. The cove opens north-northwest with nothing outside it, so from about November to March a north swell makes it rough and dangerous, by our read of the map. No lifeguard.

Routes to Little Bay, Tortola
About 23 minutes by car from Road Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.
The road down to Little Bay
By car, and the road is the reason the cove stays empty. From the Road Town ferry terminal it is 23 minutes east along the island and down Little Bay Drive to the lane end above the sand, by our measurement; from the West End terminal it is 54, the length of Tortola. The map records the drive and the short lane at its end as unpaved, and one account says most of it is paved and that a gate can close it, so expect a mix. Take a car with some clearance, four-wheel drive if it has rained, and go slowly. Driving is on the left.
The lane ends about 70 m from the sand, under a minute's walk, with no path mapped the last of the way, and no lot is mapped, so park where you block nobody. A taxi will bring you down if the driver is willing on the surface, but nobody waits at the bottom to call one back; agree the pickup before the driver leaves.
Is Little Bay on Tortola public?
The sand is. On March 9, 2023, the territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly that all BVI beaches are public, and that where a beach adjoins private property access must still be provided. The land behind Little Bay is private, and the lane may be gated. If the gate is shut, do not climb it: the honest alternatives are to ask whoever holds it, or to take the afternoon at Lambert Beach next door.
The tradeoff is the same as on most of the north-east shore. Being allowed on the beach is not the same as being served on it: there is no bar, no restroom and nothing to rent, so bring water, lunch and anything you plan to swim with.
Swimming at Little Bay: calm summers, rough winters
On a calm summer day the cove is a small, sheltered-feeling stretch of sand, with sea grapes along the east end for shade and boulders at the west end worth a look with a mask; we rate the snorkeling 3 of 5, a pleasant half hour rather than a reason to come. The rest is sand, and the point is the swim and the fact that nobody else is on it.
Winter changes it completely. The cove opens north-northwest with nothing outside it, by our read from the map, so from roughly November to March a north swell runs in, and on those days the water is rough and dangerous, with nobody nearby to help. There is no lifeguard. The Department of Disaster Management issues high-surf advisories for the north shoreline when a swell runs, and when one is out it covers this cove too. If the sea is up when you reach the top of the lane, turn around; the south side of the island is the safer swim that day.
Little Bay or Lambert Beach next door
Choose Little Bay for a cove to yourself and the drive that comes with it. Lambert Beach, the long bay just west, is the easier half day: a longer run of sand, a resort behind it and a road that ends close to the water, though its restrooms and restaurant are for the resort's guests. Josiah's Bay, farther west, is the surf beach and the one with a bar on the sand. Little Bay suits a couple or a small party staying on this end of the island who want a short drive to an empty beach on a flat day.
