Smuggler's Cove on Tortola

Smuggler's Cove is the beach at the far western tip of Tortola, at the end of a rough unpaved road, with sea grape and palms behind the sand and a reef a short swim out. It is free, quiet and run by nobody, a gentle first snorkel on a flat day. The catch is a north swell, with no lifeguard.

Conditions: Calm in the trade wind, with a reef close to shore. It opens northwest toward Great Thatch, so a north or northwest swell runs straight in, by our read of the map. No lifeguard on duty, per the Department of Disaster Management's advisory of January 2022.

Routes to Smuggler's Cove

About 39 minutes by car from Road Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.

The unpaved road to Smuggler's Cove

By car or taxi from West End, where the Red Hook boats from St. Thomas land; the drive from the ferry terminal is 7 minutes, and from Road Town it is most of the length of the island. The road runs north over the hill to the end of the point, the next cove west of Long Bay, and the last stretch is unpaved and potholed. Take it slowly in a rental, and slower after rain. You park under the trees where the road gives out at the sand.

Without a car, a taxi from the West End terminal is the way. Fares are set by the government's taxi tariff, last revised in December 2022, so ask the driver for the tariff fare first, and agree when they come back, because nothing at the cove will call one for you.

Smuggler's Cove beach: shade, and nothing for sale

A short arc of sand at the very end of Tortola, backed by sea grape and palms that give it more shade than most of the island's beaches, and facing northwest across the channel toward Great Thatch and Jost Van Dyke.

It is free, and nobody runs it: no posted fee, no hours, no restrooms listed. Beach bars and snorkel rentals here come and go, and none publishes itself, so we name none. Plan as if nothing is for sale, and treat anything that is as a bonus.

The tradeoff: the government's last word on the beach is a warning. The Department of Disaster Management's beach safety advisory of January 6, 2022 said no lifeguards were on duty at Josiah's Bay or Smuggler's Cove, and nothing published since says one was posted. Swim with someone, and stay out when the swell is up.

Is Smuggler's Cove good for snorkeling?

Yes, on a flat day, and gently enough for a beginner. The reef starts a short swim from the sand, close enough to make this a first-timer's snorkel, and we rate it 4 of 5. Wade in from the middle of the beach and follow the rocks either way.

The catch is the direction the cove faces. In the trade wind it is calm, but a north or northwest swell, most likely in winter, comes straight in, and then the reef is no place to learn. Long Bay, the next beach east, is a mile of sand with little to snorkel, so at this end of the island Smuggler's Cove is the one to bring a mask to. It suits a family with a confident swimmer, and anyone off the Red Hook ferry with an afternoon to spend.
