British Virgin Islands restaurants and bars
Eating out in the British Virgin Islands happens across four islands, and the boat decides which kitchens you can reach for dinner. Tortola has the most restaurants and bars, and it is the one island where dinner never waits on a ferry. Jost Van Dyke has the beach bars, Virgin Gorda the Baths and North Sound, and Anegada the lobster.

Where to eat in the BVI, island by island
Choose the island you sleep on, then the town. Tortola has the deepest bench: Road Town's dinner rooms, which keep office hours and want a booking; the beach kitchens of Cane Garden Bay on the north shore; West End, around Soper's Hole and Long Bay; and Trellis Bay beside the airport. A house anywhere on Tortola can drive to any of them and home again.
Virgin Gorda splits in two. Spanish Town and the Valley, at the south end, have the beach tables and the lunch above the Baths; North Sound, at the top, has Saba Rock and Bitter End, which you reach on their own boats from Gun Creek. Jost Van Dyke's kitchens sit in two bays, Great Harbour and White Bay, and Anegada's are where the lobster is the meal and the order goes in by afternoon. On those three islands, the house you rent decides which kitchen is a walk and which is a boat.
Beach bars in the British Virgin Islands
The beach bar is the territory's signature, and each island keeps its own. On Jost Van Dyke, the Soggy Dollar Bar on White Bay says the Painkiller originated there in the 1970s, and Foxy's in Great Harbour has served its beach since 1968 by its own account, open to midnight when the crowd stays. On Virgin Gorda, Jumbies puts pub food on the sand at Leverick Bay, and Saba Rock's bars stand on their own small island in North Sound. On Anegada, Big Bamboo is lunch on the beach at Loblolly Bay, and it closes at six.
None of these bars prints menu prices online, so their bands in the table are our read of what each serves. Foxy's takes table bookings on its own site, which most beach bars do not; the rest is a matter of arriving before the day boats.
The BVI dinners worth planning a day around
A handful of dinners shape a BVI trip. In Road Town, ONDE serves Italian in the Customs House at Pier Park and The Dove cooks in a West Indian cottage on Main Street; both want a booking. At Long Bay on Tortola's West End, the 1748 Restaurant sits in an 18th-century distillery. On Virgin Gorda, CocoMaya sets its tables on the sand among the granite boulders of Spanish Town, facing west across the channel, and Saba Rock is a dinner with a boat ride at each end.
On Anegada, the Anegada Reef Hotel at Setting Point has grilled lobster over local torchwood since 1976. It is the meal the island is known for, and it is cooked only for the people who booked it.
The tradeoff: the last boat sets the dinner hour
Away from Tortola, dinner is a question of how you get home. The last scheduled ferry back from Jost Van Dyke leaves Great Harbour at 5 pm, Speedy's last daily boat back from Virgin Gorda leaves Spanish Town at 8 pm, for Trellis Bay, and the Anegada ferry runs three days a week in alternate fortnights, on the operators' own timetables. An evening on the outer islands means a night there, a water taxi booked both ways, or a boat of your own.
The season narrows the choice further. Several kitchens take a fall break and change their days by the month: The Restaurant at Leverick Bay closes for a few weeks in the autumn, CocoMaya keeps a shorter week out of season, and The Dove serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday only. In the fall, call the kitchen before you go.
Questions about where to eat and drink in the BVI
What is the most famous bar in the BVI?
Two names come up first, both on Jost Van Dyke. The Soggy Dollar Bar on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, says the Painkiller originated there in the 1970s; Foxy's in Great Harbour has served its beach since 1968 by its own account. Both are reached by ferry or boat.
Do you need reservations at BVI restaurants?
For dinner, usually yes, as of October 2026. The Dove in Road Town says reservations are essential, Bitter End's Clubhouse recommends them, and on Anegada the Anegada Reef Hotel wants the dinner booked by 4 pm and the Anegada Beach Club by 5 pm. Most beach bars seat whoever walks up.
Where can you eat lobster in the BVI?
On Anegada, where the spiny lobster comes from and the kitchens grill it to order. The Anegada Reef Hotel printed a whole lobster at $65 and a half at $45 on its dinner menu, read October 2026, with the booking due by 4 pm. On Tortola and Virgin Gorda, Rhythm + Sands, CocoMaya and others list it at market price.
