Catherineberg, St. John
Catherineberg, St. John, USVI is the ridge above the North Shore: houses along Centerline Road in the middle of the island, around a sugar mill ruin the National Park keeps, with the park beaches a few minutes below. It suits a beach week with a car. From Catherineberg, Cruz Bay town is 12 minutes by car.
Estates and places here: Hammer Farm and Cathrineberg, Adrian, L'Esperance, Rustenberg and Adventure. These are the names on addresses and deeds; a villa in any of them is listed under Catherineberg.
Staying in Catherineberg
Catherineberg is the North Shore seen from above. The area sits on the island's spine along Centerline Road, about 800 feet up by our measurement, with Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay below it on the coast road. The houses stand in the private estates around the ruin: Hammer Farm and Cathrineberg, spelled that way on the estate map, Adrian, and Rustenberg and Adventure. L'Esperance, to the south, is park land with no houses filed in it. A week here has a shape. You drive down to the water in the morning, come back up for the afternoon, and drive into Cruz Bay for dinner and the grocery.
The estate gave the area its name before anyone rented a house in it. The National Park Service calls the ruins of Catherineberg plantation a well-preserved Danish colonial period site, and one of few on St. John with a windmill ruin still standing; like Annaberg and Cinnamon Bay, its sugar was made by an enslaved labor force. The park says visitors can drive the rough road up to the ruins with care or park at the base of the hill and walk, per its places page as of October 2026. It is a short stop, and the one sight in the area you reach without going down to the coast or into town.
Rent a car for Catherineberg. We measure the ground here as rolling, gentle enough for an ordinary rental on Centerline Road, but ask the owner about the driveway before choosing between a sedan and a jeep. From the middle of the area, Cruz Bay town is 12 minutes away, and the town holds everything else: the restaurants, the full grocery and the Red Hook ferry, which keeps an off-season timetable from late July that usually runs to the end of October, so check the last boat on the ferry guide before a late crossing. A car brought from St. Thomas crosses on the barge to Enighed Pond, $65 one way on the Big Red Barge and Love City Car Ferries rates pages as of October 2026. A taxi from the Cruz Bay dock to Catherineberg is $14 for one person or $11 each for two or more, plus $3 a bag, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff in force since October 2022.
The beaches are the reason to choose this ridge, and our measured drives say why. From the middle of the area, Cinnamon Bay, the nearest, is 5 minutes down. Trunk Bay is 8 minutes, and the only one with an entry fee: $5 for anyone 16 or older, paid by card or phone since October 1, 2026, per NPS. Maho Bay is 9 minutes and free, the beach the park names for sea turtles, with a 33-space lot. Hawksnest is 11 minutes, where the park says the lot is often full by mid-morning. Waterlemon Cay is 17 minutes and Francis Bay 20.
The tradeoff: nothing here is on foot. The sand is a drive down and the town is a drive in, so every swim and every dinner needs the car and a driver who stays sober for the climb home after dark. If a beach at the end of the path matters more than the choice of beaches, Peter Bay, below on the coast, has sand at the foot of the hill, and its owners say how guests get down to it; if walking to dinner matters, stay in Cruz Bay. Buy the week's groceries in Cruz Bay before the first drive up, because the ridge has no shop.
Suits a week built around the North Shore beaches, by a group that drives down in the morning and does not mind driving to dinner.
Getting around
Catherineberg needs a car: the roads roll rather than climb, the nearest sand is 5 minutes by car and Cruz Bay is 12 minutes by road.

Phones work along Centerline Road by the Catherineberg ruins and fade as the roads drop toward the North Shore, by our read of trip reports, so a house lower on the slope may lean on wifi calling. Water is whatever the house's cistern holds, and the owner can tell you whether a generator takes over in an outage.
