Park at the Peace Hill lot, 10 minutes from Cruz Bay, then walk 4 minutes down a side path. The National Park Service charges nothing to use it as of October 2026.

Getting to Denis Bay from the Peace Hill lot
Denis Bay is reached on foot from the Peace Hill parking lot, 10 minutes by car from Cruz Bay by our measurement, a minute short of the Jumbie lot further along North Shore Road. The lot is small, on the left coming from town, and no source publishes how many cars it holds as of October 2026. Coming over from St. Thomas, the Red Hook passenger ferry puts you in Cruz Bay, and the drive starts in town. A taxi can do that leg too: the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff lists the stop as Dennis Bay, $12 from Cruz Bay for a lone passenger and $9 apiece for two or more, on the schedule in force since October 2022.
From the lot, start up the Peace Hill Trail and take the narrow path that leaves it on the right, about 40 meters in. It drops to the western end of the beach in 4 minutes by our measurement, and the same path climbs back. The park's hiking advice, sturdy shoes and half a gallon of water for every four hours out, matters more than the distance suggests, because nothing is sold at the bottom. The only other way in is by water, and the park's compendium of Oct 6, 2026 closes Denis Bay to commercial groups arriving by any commercial vessel.
Peace Hill itself is the walk the lot is signed for. Stay on the main trail instead of turning right and it climbs for about 10 minutes, by our read, to an overlook at the stone tower of an old sugar mill, with Hawksnest Bay on one side and Denis Bay on the other.
What is at Denis Bay, and what is private
A visitor may be on the sand and on the path down from Peace Hill. The land behind the beach, the plantation ruins included, is private above the high water line: the national park holds pockets of private land inside its boundary, and this is one of them. The park publishes no boundary for Denis Bay, but its hiking page gives the rule for the whole park in two sentences: "Stay on the trails. Do not trespass on private property." Keep off the ruins and off anything inland of the beach.
Those ruins are the old plantation, on the National Register as the Dennis Bay Historic District since Jul 23, 1981. The nomination puts the district at 20 acres and says the plantation was claimed and cleared by 1728 and turned very early to sugar cane. It places a windmill tower and a horsemill on the high bluff to the west, both later than 1800, and the plantation house, factory, still and a village of five masonry cabins on the shoreline of the bay.
The sand faces north toward the British Virgin Islands, with rocks at either end and Perkins Cay off the western end, where the path arrives. Trees at the back of the beach give some shade, in the one account we read that describes them, though the ground under them may be above the high water line, on the private side.
Nothing is provided at the bottom as of October 2026: no restroom, no tap, nothing to rent or buy. The tradeoff for a beach you will likely have to yourself is that the cooler, the water and the snorkel gear walk down with you, and back up.
Snorkeling and swimming at Denis Bay, St. John, USVI
The snorkeling is along the rocks at either end, on a calm day. The rocky outcroppings on both sides hold what coral there is, and the National Park Service does not list Denis Bay among the park's snorkel sites, though it lists Hawksnest Bay, the next bay west. That is why we score it 3 of 5: good at the edges, not a reef beach.
The caution is the swell. Nothing stands between Denis Bay and the open water to the north, and in winter, by the park's conditions page as of October 2026, cold fronts push the Christmas winds south and throw big surf onto this coast; the park's advice then is great care getting in, and to follow posted warnings and its staff. No park page lists a lifeguard here, and the park asks that nobody hike or swim alone, which counts for more on a beach where yours may be the only towel.
Suits a walker who wants a North Shore beach with almost nobody on it and is content to carry water in and climb out; less so anyone who needs a restroom, a flat path, or calm water in a winter swell.

Questions people ask about Denis Bay
- Where is Denis Bay beach?
- Denis Bay lies on St. John's North Shore within Virgin Islands National Park, between Hawksnest Bay and Jumbie Bay and below Peace Hill. The way in is the Peace Hill lot on North Shore Road, 10 minutes by car from Cruz Bay, measured on island roads in October 2026.
- Can you walk to Denis Bay beach?
- You have to: no road reaches the sand. From the Peace Hill lot, head up the Peace Hill Trail and take the narrow path that branches right; it reaches the western end of the beach in 4 minutes by our measurement, and the way back is uphill. Carry water, since nothing is sold below.
- How do you get to Denis Bay from St. Thomas?
- Ride the Red Hook passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay, drive North Shore Road east for 10 minutes to the Peace Hill lot, then walk 4 minutes down the side path. Arriving by boat is limited: the park's compendium of Oct 6, 2026 closes Denis Bay to commercial groups landing from commercial vessels.
- Is there a fee at Denis Bay?
- No. As of October 2026 the National Park Service requires no entrance pass for Virgin Islands National Park, and its fees page lists no charge for the Peace Hill lot. The one park beach that charges is Trunk Bay, $5 for ages 16 and over.
