Mahoe Bay on Virgin Gorda

Mahoe Bay is a small, calm cove on Virgin Gorda's northwest coast, below a hillside of villas and beside one small resort, with a reef close in and the Sir Francis Drake Channel beyond. It is mostly a beach for the people staying above it. The catch, for anyone driving in, is a short, slightly awkward walk down.

Conditions: Calm on most days, with a reef close to shore; the cove faces west, its back to the trade wind. A big winter northwest swell can reach it, by our read of the map. No lifeguard and no facilities as of October 2026.

Routes to Mahoe Bay

About 12 minutes by car from Spanish Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.

Two honest ways down to Mahoe Bay

By car or taxi from the Spanish Town ferry dock, north through The Valley and up the road toward Nail Bay, 12 minutes to the road above the cove. That road is the end of the drive: no lot is mapped, and the shortest way down to the sand is about 150 m, two minutes on foot, though no public path is mapped and the lanes nearest the water serve the villas.

That leaves two honest ways in. Stay in one of the villas above the bay, or at Mango Bay Resort beside it, and the sand is at the bottom of the garden. Or drive in, park considerately on the road and ask at the resort or a villa for the way down, rather than crossing a garden uninvited. A taxi will drop you, but nobody waits at the beach to call one back, so agree the pickup time before the driver leaves.

Is Mahoe Bay public?

Yes, the sand is. On March 9, 2023, the territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly that all BVI beaches are public, and that even where a beach adjoins private property, access must still be provided for public use. He was speaking about a dispute on another Virgin Gorda beach, and the rule is the same here: the water and the shore are open, the gardens and terraces behind them are not.

The tradeoff: being allowed on the beach is not the same as being served on it. There is no bar, no restroom and nothing to rent. Mango Bay Resort keeps kayaks and snorkel gear for its own guests, and the nearest lunch for anyone else is back in Spanish Town or farther on at Leverick Bay.

Snorkeling Mahoe Bay's reef from the sand

On most days the water is calm, the cove faces west with its back to the trade wind, and the reef starts a short swim from the sand. Mango Bay Resort, beside the cove, says on its own site that its beach is naturally protected by a coral reef. By our read the snorkeling is easy for beginners and turtles are often seen, which is why we rate it 4 of 5. The drawback is getting there, not the water.

In winter a big northwest swell can reach a west-facing cove, by our read of the map, and on those days the entry gets rough and the swim is off. There is no lifeguard. Savannah Bay, the next long beach south past Pond Bay, is the free beach with its own reef if Mahoe is too awkward to reach. Mahoe suits a family staying on the hillside who want calm water and a reef at the bottom of the garden.

Questions people ask about Mahoe Bay

Where is Mahoe Bay on Virgin Gorda?

On the northwest coast, north of Savannah Bay and Pond Bay, below the road to Nail Bay. It is 12 minutes by car from the Spanish Town ferry dock to the road above the cove, by our measurement, then about 150 m down to the sand; no lot or public path is mapped.

Can you go to Mahoe Bay if you are not staying there?

Yes. The territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly on March 9, 2023, that all BVI beaches are public and that access must be provided even beside private property. No lot or public path is mapped, so park on the road and ask the way down.

Is Mahoe Bay good for snorkeling?

4 of 5, by our read: a reef close to shore in calm water, easy for beginners, with turtles often seen. Mango Bay Resort's own site says its beach is protected by a coral reef. A big winter northwest swell is the drawback, and there is no lifeguard.

How far is Mahoe Bay from The Baths?

12 minutes north of the Spanish Town ferry dock for Mahoe Bay and 10 south for The Baths, both by car, so the drive between them runs back through town; no direct leg between the two was measured. The pair make a day: The Baths at the 8:30 am opening, Mahoe Bay for the afternoon.
