Nail Bay on Virgin Gorda

Nail Bay is the villa estate on Virgin Gorda's northwest slope and the long beach below it, a strip of sand under the golf course with a reef breaking just offshore and the Dog Islands on the horizon. It suits confident snorkelers more than toddlers. The catch is the way down, across private ground with no public path.

Conditions: A reef breaks just offshore, with shallows to cross before the snorkeling; the beach faces northwest, so a winter north swell runs straight in, by our read of the map. No lifeguard and no facilities as of October 2026.

Routes to Nail Bay, Virgin Gorda

About 19 minutes by car from Spanish Town. How to reach the British Virgin Islands: British Virgin Islands map, British Virgin Islands weather, month by month, Ferries between the British Virgin Islands, Getting to the British Virgin Islands, Things to do in Tortola and the British Virgin Islands.

Is Nail Bay Resort still open?

Nail Bay began as a resort on the ground of an old sugar plantation, and the name still turns up on booking sites as if it were one. As of October 2026 we found no resort operating a site or a front desk under the name: the estate's own website has been offline for years, and its villas, hillside and beachfront alike, are let by their owners and the agents who manage them. That is the way to stay here now, house by house.

What carries on as a business is Sugarcane, the restaurant and sports club on the hill above the beach, open since 2009 on the old plantation ground. It runs tennis, padel and squash courts and a hillside pool, and serves from Wednesday afternoon through Sunday as of October 2026. The sugar mill ruins sit beside it, and the estate's golf course runs down to the sand.

Reaching the sand from Sugar Mill Way

By car or taxi from the Spanish Town ferry dock, north through The Valley and up the Nail Bay road into the estate, 19 minutes to Sugar Mill Way; from the Gun Creek dock on the North Sound side it is 13. The road passes about 80 m above the beach, and between them lies the estate's golf course. No lot is mapped and no public path is drawn across it.

On March 9, 2023, the territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly that all BVI beaches are public, and that where a beach adjoins private property access must still be provided. So the sand is open, and the ground behind it is not anyone's shortcut by default. If you are not staying here, ask at Sugarcane or a villa for the way down rather than walking the fairways, and agree a pickup time with your driver before they leave, because nothing at the beach will call one.

Snorkeling Nail Bay's reef in the right season

This is the reef beach of the estate. A line of reef breaks a short swim offshore, and the snorkeling is across the shallows inside it, which the estate itself used to call some of the best on the island. The entry is the drawback: the shallows take care over coral, and the swim suits a confident snorkeler in calm water, not a first-timer. We rate it 4 of 5.

The beach faces northwest, so a winter north swell runs straight onto that reef, by our read of the map, and on those days the water is for looking at. There is no lifeguard and nothing to rent. Mountain Trunk Bay, around the rocky point to the south, is the gentle cove with an easy sand entry; Long Bay lies past the boulders at the north end, and Mahoe Bay and Savannah Bay are the calmer reef beaches farther south.

Questions people ask about Nail Bay, Virgin Gorda

Where is Nail Bay on Virgin Gorda?

On the northwest coast, below Gorda Peak, between Mountain Trunk Bay and Long Bay. Sugar Mill Way, above the beach, is 19 minutes by car from the Spanish Town ferry dock and 13 from the Gun Creek dock, by our measurement; the sand is about 80 m below it, across the estate's golf course.

Is Nail Bay Resort still open?

Not as a resort, as far as we found in October 2026: no site or front desk operates under the name, and the estate's villas are let by their owners and agents. Sugarcane, the restaurant and sports club above the beach, is open Wednesday to Sunday by its own site.

Can you go to Nail Bay beach if you are not staying there?

Yes, the sand is public. The territory's Minister for Natural Resources and Labour told the House of Assembly on March 9, 2023, that all BVI beaches are public and that access must be provided even beside private property. No public path is mapped across the golf course, so ask the way down.

Is Nail Bay good for snorkeling?

4 of 5, by our read: a reef a short swim offshore with good life across the shallows, best for confident snorkelers on a calm day. The entry over the shallows and the winter north swell are the drawbacks; Mountain Trunk Bay next door is the easier swim.
