St. John USVI photographers for family and proposal shoots

Most people hire a St. John, USVI photographer for one hour at the edge of the day: a family barefoot at the waterline, a proposal on an empty beach, a honeymoon portrait on the villa deck. A few live on the island. Others come across from St. Thomas, and the ferry can show up on the bill.

What a St. John photo session costs

An hour is the usual booking, and three photographers print what it costs. Brooke Heikkila, who works from St. Thomas and St. John, starts family and couples sessions at $600 for 60 minutes and elopements at $800, plus a St. John travel fee when it applies. Chelsey Williams, on St. Thomas, charges $700 for an hour and 75 edited photos and $1,400 for a two-hour elopement of ten guests or fewer, and calls those St. Thomas prices, so ask about the crossing. All as of October 2026.

The photographers who live on St. John, Yelena Rogers and Nancy Borowick of Love City Photo among them, quote on request. For a wedding with a venue and a license, the St. John weddings page has the planners and the fees.

Photos on a national park beach

Most of the frames people want are inside Virgin Islands National Park: Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Hawksnest. For a family or a proposal that is no paperwork. Per the National Park Service, as of its permits page updated June 30, 2026, still photography with eight people or fewer usually needs no permit or fee; more than eight needs a permit, with a $50 non-refundable application fee and about 10 business days to process.

The tradeoff for a reunion or a big wedding party is that lead time, so count heads before you pick the beach. And no drones: the park does not allow them over land or water.

The light, the heat and booking ahead

Plan the session for the edge of the day. Midday light on white sand is flat and hard on faces, and Nick Heinemann warns on his own site that a morning session warms up quickly. Sunset is the usual choice; an early start has the beaches nearly to yourselves.

He suggests about two months' notice. By our read, the Christmas, spring-break and wedding weeks book out further than that, so write when the villa is booked, not when you land.

Villa photography for owners and managers

Listing shoots are a separate trade, mostly based on St. Thomas. MEDIABOOST.VI prints its prices, $395 for up to two bedrooms and $795 for three or more with a surcharge from five, plus a St. John travel fee; Mango Media quotes the shoot and the crossing together and delivers in 48 hours. Both as of October 2026. Plan the aerial frame around the park: no drone may fly over park land or water, which matters for a house above a North Shore bay.

Questions about photographers on St. John

How much does a photographer cost on St. John?

Do you need a permit for photos on a St. John beach?

Not for a small group. Per the National Park Service, still photography with eight people or fewer usually needs no permit or fee; more than eight needs a permit, a $50 non-refundable application fee and about 10 business days, as of its page updated June 30, 2026.

Can a photographer fly a drone over the beach?

Not inside Virgin Islands National Park, which covers most of St. John's North Shore beaches. The National Park Service does not allow drones in the park over land or water.

How far ahead should we book a photographer on St. John?

About two months, as Heinemann Images suggests, and earlier for the holidays, spring break and wedding season, when the few photographers on the island fill first. Write as soon as the villa is booked.
