What a private chef dinner costs on St. John

The printed per-person prices sit closer together than the bills do. Passion Fruit Chefs starts a chef's dinner at $95 a person plus 20 percent gratuity, on a page last edited in May 2025. Coral Bay Catering charges $148 a person for a four-course plated dinner, $154 family style and $174 for the lobster-and-filet version, with six guests the minimum. Chef Vincent Alterio starts family style at $165 and a tasting menu at $185. St. John Catering and Mathayom Private Chefs, Chef Mat Vacharat's company in Coral Bay, charges $165 a person family style and $219 plated. All as of October 2026, from each company's own site.

The tradeoff is what sits under the number. St. John Catering carries a $750 minimum for any on-site meal, a $275 server fee once the table reaches eleven, and gratuity on top; its drop-off page bills that at 20 percent in the villa. Coral Bay Catering adds 20 percent gratuity, 5 percent processing and a $150 server fee in the villa. Chef Alterio adds a $250 service fee at eight guests. Island Edge Culinary, which crosses from St. Thomas, prints the highest rates here, $265 to $295 a person by group size, and an 18 percent administrative fee it says is not a gratuity. Oasis Private Chefs, Chef Shaibu's company at The Marketplace, quotes on request.

Drop-off dinners and a stocked fridge for arrival night

The cheaper way to eat in on the first night is a drop-off: the chef cooks elsewhere and the food arrives hot or ready to reheat. Coral Bay Catering's Easy Arrival Dinner is $350 for a table of six to eight, with a $65 delivery fee, and its gourmet drop-off is $95 a person. St. John Catering drops a hot meal at $99 a person or a cold or grill-pack version at $89, with a $525 minimum. Passion Fruit Chefs starts an arrival-day drop-off dinner at $75 a person. Sam & Jack's Catering, the deli's kitchen at The Marketplace, sells oven-ready trays, a lasagna from $120 or jerk chicken from $150, each small tray feeding six to eight, for pickup or delivery; its taco bar and brunch packages run $45 to $60 a person at six or more. Prices are each company's own as of October 2026.

A drop-off still needs a fridge with room in it. The grocery and delivery options are on the provisioning page, and the restaurants, for the nights nobody cooks, on St. John eat and drink.

Chefs who cross from St. Thomas, ferry included

Five of the companies here are based on St. Thomas and name St. John as served: DiveIn in Red Hook, Island Edge Culinary, Love City Lunch Box, Ultimate Chef Services and Chef Marshall Bishop. DiveIn starts a four-course dinner at $150 a person with a 20 percent service charge and says St. John carries a travel fee it does not print; Ultimate Chef Services says the same and prices by inquiry. By our read, ask for the crossing as a line item before you compare it with a chef who lives here, because the ferry and a car on the other side are an afternoon of the chef's day.

The island's own geography costs money too. St. John Catering adds a transport fee of at least $90 for villas on the East End beyond Calabash Boom, and a house on the East End is forty minutes from Cruz Bay by our measurement, each way, for anyone. The St. Thomas side of the same question, with the chefs' St. Thomas terms, is on St. Thomas private chefs.

Booking ahead, the holidays and the size of the table

The island's chefs are few and the villas are many, so the calendar fills before the menu does. St. John Catering says its 2026 and 2027 dates are filling quickly and wants menu choices two weeks before the first meal; a booking under 48 hours out may carry a last-minute fee. Ultimate Chef Services asks for two weeks on a single dinner and two to three months on its four-day package. Island Edge wants 72 hours at least. Love City Lunch Box says Chef Faye books quickly and keeps a waiting list.

Christmas costs more. From December 17 to January 7, St. John Catering's minimum rises to $1,000 on site and $700 for a delivery; Coral Bay Catering adds a $150 holiday fee from December 18 to January 4 and books Christmas Day and New Year's Eve by email only, with a $350 fee. Most of the printed prices assume six or more at the table, and the ceilings vary: Island Edge cooks for up to 25 in the villa, Love City Lunch Box caters events up to 35, and St. John Catering's wedding packages seat up to 50 on site. For a wedding with a venue and a license, the planners and caterers are on St. John weddings.

For owners: the welcome dinner as a perk

No chef on this page prints a program for villa managers, so the terms are by arrangement. The packages that suit a welcome dinner are the drop-offs: Coral Bay Catering's $350 arrival dinner for six to eight, Ultimate Chef Services' Island Arrival Night and farewell dinners, Sam & Jack's oven-ready trays. By our read, a manager who books the same chef for every arrival should ask about the holiday fees and the East End transport fee up front, since those are what turn a perk into a surprise on the owner's invoice. The rest of the services a house can offer are on St. John services.
