St. Thomas honeymoon

Written by Virgin Islands Villas · Updated Oct 10, 2026 · How this was checked

A St. Thomas honeymoon is decided by where you sleep. The airport to Red Hook is 36 minutes by car, and the side you choose sets how far dinner is: Frenchtown is 5 minutes from Charlotte Amalie, Secret Harbour 9 from Red Hook. Below: the areas measured for couples, the months, the evening clock and the court's marriage rules.

Where to stay on St. Thomas for a honeymoon

Choose between the sand and dinner; on St. Thomas the two rarely come together. We measured each area from its center for the walk to the nearest beach, the drive to Charlotte Amalie and to the Red Hook ferry terminal, and how steep the ground is.

Drives by car, measured September 2026.

Magens Bay, Secret Harbour and Smith Bay are the three areas where the beach is a short walk on ground that is not steep, and they split across the island: Magens Bay on the north shore, 13 minutes from Charlotte Amalie, Secret Harbour and Smith Bay on the East End, 9 and 12 minutes from Red Hook. Frenchtown is the reverse trade, flat and 5 minutes from town with no beach on foot. Peterborg, Red Hook and Bluebeard's measure steep, which means low gear on the driveway in a rental. A car is needed almost everywhere; Frenchtown and Red Hook are the two on this list where it is only recommended.

How far is dinner in Frenchtown, Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie?

Charlotte Amalie and Frenchtown sit together on the south shore, 5 minutes apart, and Red Hook is at the far East End. Between the two ends is 28 minutes by our measurement, from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront to the Red Hook terminal.

That drive is the honeymoon's real budget. A couple on the East End who wants dinner in Frenchtown drives the better part of an hour there and back, and the drive home is after dark: the sun is down by about 7 pm in every month of the year. Pick the town you will eat in most, then the area nearest it.

If neither of you wants to drive home, stay within a walk of the table. Frenchtown is 24 minutes on foot from Charlotte Amalie, and the center of Red Hook is 4 minutes on foot from the ferry terminal.

When is the best time for a St. Thomas honeymoon?

February and March are the driest months on the island's weather record, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Cyril E. King airport station: 1.9 inches of rain each, highs of 84 and 85 degrees, and the sea at 80 to 81. NOAA's hurricane tracks show no tropical storm within 100 km of Charlotte Amalie in any February to June from 1991 to 2024.

A June wedding lands in a good month: 89 degrees with 2.4 inches of rain and the sea at 84.

The months to weigh are August to November. September carries the island's storm record, six tropical systems within 100 km in 34 seasons, four of them hurricanes. November is often sold as the start of the dry season; on the record it is the wettest month of the year, 6.1 inches over ten wet days. Every month is on the St. Thomas weather page, and hurricane season, with what a travel policy covers, is the one subject to read up on before a September or October booking.

Things to do in St. Thomas for couples, and when they close

The evening clock decides more of a honeymoon day than the map does. Sunset on St. Thomas falls between 5:42 pm in late November and 7 pm in early July, by our calculation for Charlotte Amalie.

Magens Bay, the island's beach park on the north shore, is open 7 am to 5:30 pm and charges $7 a visitor and $2 to park, per the Magens Bay Authority as of October 2026. The gates close before the earliest sunset of the year, so a Magens day is a morning or an afternoon, never an evening.

Honeymoon Beach on Water Island is reached by boat. The Water Island Ferry leaves Crown Bay Marina, 9 minutes by car from Charlotte Amalie, every hour for $20 round trip, and the last boat back is 6:15 pm every day as of October 2026. From late September to early February the sun sets before that boat leaves; from February to late September it leaves in daylight.

A day on St. John starts at the Red Hook terminal, where the passenger ferry crosses to Cruz Bay in 20 minutes. Secret Harbour and Smith Bay put that dock 9 and 12 minutes from the door; Frenchtown puts it 34.

Getting married on St. Thomas: what the court requires

A marriage license in the US Virgin Islands is issued by the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, through its Family Division. These are its rules as published on October 9, 2026.

StepWhat the court says
Application$100, non-refundable
License$100, paid before pick-up
Posting8 days for public examination
Weekend or holiday license$150 more per couple, by arrangement
Ceremony by a judge$400
Blood testNone required
ReturnThe signed license goes back to the court within 10 days

In person, fees are paid by certified check, money order or cash; filed online, by card. Each of you needs a passport or a driver's license, and a certified divorce decree or death certificate if either has been married before.

The tradeoff is the eight-day posting. A couple who lands on a Saturday and applies on Monday will not have a license before a one-week stay ends. The court takes applications through its e-filing portal and mails a packet to couples off island, so apply before you fly, with the ceremony date on the cover sheet.

A resort package or a house for two?

The St. Thomas honeymoon packages that lead a search on October 9, 2026 are resort rooms sold with extras. A whole house is the other choice: a kitchen of your own and nobody on the other side of the wall. The villas on this page are listed by their owners, who set the rate and answer you themselves; you pay the owner, not a platform, and there is no service fee.

Pick the town you will eat in, then the area nearest it, and if you are marrying here, file at least eight days before the date.
