Eight other routes leave St. Thomas and St. John, for Water Island, St. Croix, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. Below: every route in one table, and each one's last boat.

The crossing times are the operators' own. The one measurement on this page is ours: Cyril E. King Airport to the Red Hook terminal is 36 minutes by car on island roads, 12 to the Charlotte Amalie terminal and 8 to Crown Bay Marina, measured 2026-09-16 without traffic.

St. Thomas to St. John: three docks and a barge

Red Hook is the boat to plan around. It leaves every hour on the hour, 20 minutes across, $8.15 an adult one way, $1 for a child aged 2 to 11, per Transportation Services of St. John as of October 2026, and the last boat out of Red Hook is 11:30 pm on the off-season timetable, with 11 pm the last back from Cruz Bay. The two other passenger boats serve the west end of St. Thomas: Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay, 45 minutes and $13, two or three sailings a day, and Inter Island's Crown Bay Marina run, 35 minutes and $20, which is the one to take straight from a late flight, since the marina is 8 minutes from the airport by our measurement.

The car barge from Red Hook to Enighed Pond takes the car and everyone in it for $65 one way on the operators' rates pages as of October 2026, and its last sailing is 7 pm, four and a half hours before the last passenger boat. The ferry page and the car-barge page carry the full timetables, the resident fares and where the fares disagree.

The ferry to Water Island

Water Island has no bridge and no car ferry, so the Water Island Ferry from Crown Bay Marina is the only way on: about 10 minutes to Phillips Landing, $20 round trip for a visitor and $10 one way, hourly from 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday with a 7 am weekday boat, 9 am to 6 pm on Sundays and holidays, returns at a quarter past the hour, last return 6:15 pm, on its timetable dated February 1, 2025 and read in October 2026. The tradeoff: a dinner in Charlotte Amalie means a run arranged with the operator, and its own page says it offers those outside the schedule. The Water Island page has the golf carts, the beach and the villas.

Is there a ferry from St. Thomas to St. Croix?

Yes, one a day each way and none on Tuesdays. QE4 Ferry leaves the Edward W. Blyden IV Marine Terminal on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront at 3 pm and reaches Gallows Bay, Christiansted, at 5:10 pm; the morning boat leaves Gallows Bay at 8 am and arrives at 10:10 am, Wednesday to Monday, per its own site as of October 2026. The fare is $85 one way on that site; the Virgin Islands Port Authority's schedule page listed $60 and Thursday to Monday on the same day, and when the two disagree the operator's booking engine is the price you pay. Check-in closes 15 minutes before departure, and the Coast Guard requires ID or birth papers for every passenger, children included. Native Son lists a St. Croix run too, in a 2023 notice, and publishes no current timetable for it; call before you plan on it.

There is no ferry from St. John to St. Croix. The route is Cruz Bay to Red Hook, a taxi across St. Thomas (36 minutes from Red Hook to the airport, 12 more into town by our measurement, so allow an hour), and the 3 pm boat.

Ferries from St. Thomas to Tortola and the BVI

Three operators share the Charlotte Amalie to Road Town run on a monthly rotation the BVI Ports Authority publishes, up to three sailings a day and 50 minutes across; Road Town Fast Ferry also runs Red Hook to West End at 8:30 am, 1:45 pm and 5:45 pm. None of the three publishes a fare outside its booking engine as of October 2026, and $40 a visitor in port, environmental and departure fees comes on top of whatever it quotes. The Tortola ferry page has the rotation, the fees added up and the passport rule both ways.

Jost Van Dyke has one direct boat: Inter Island Boat Services from Red Hook at 7:30 am, calling at Cruz Bay at 8 am, back from Great Harbour at 3:30 pm, on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays, $150 round trip listed plus $30 a person in customs fees, checked 2026-10-09. The same operator lists Red Hook to Virgin Gorda at $200 and to Anegada at $230 on its booking calendar. Speedy's runs Charlotte Amalie to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda, on Saturdays, 90 minutes, $60 one way and $110 round trip, and pauses it from September 1 to October 31 by its own notice; it is usually back in early November, so check with Speedy's before you plan on it.

Every crossing into the BVI needs a passport book or a US passport card for every visitor, per the Government of the Virgin Islands. The passport and entry page says what changes at the border.

Ferries within the British Virgin Islands

Once on Tortola, the islands connect by short public boats. Speedy's runs Road Town to Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda, five times a day Monday to Saturday from 7:45 am, with two more on weekdays and two on Sunday afternoons, $30 one way and $40 round trip for an adult on its rates page as of October 2026. New Horizon Ferry runs West End to Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke, five times daily at $40 round trip, read 2026-10-09. Anegada is Road Town Fast Ferry's seasonal run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with no times or fares posted when we read its page. The BVI Ports Authority posts each month's calendar as an image on its ferry page, and that is the one to check the week you travel.

The last boat on every route

The number a villa guest plans around is the last departure, and it is different on every route. From Red Hook to St. John it is 11:30 pm; the car barge's is 7 pm; the Water Island boat's is 6 pm out and 6:15 pm back; the Red Hook boat to Tortola's is 5:45 pm; the St. Croix boat's is the one 3 pm sailing; Jost Van Dyke's is 3:30 pm from Great Harbour. Miss the last scheduled boat to St. John and the fallback is a private water taxi, from $495 one way from Compass Point Marina with St. Thomas Water Taxi, checked 2026-10-09. A late flight into St. Thomas with a St. Thomas rental cannot barge the car to St. John that night, so most guests cross on foot and rent in Cruz Bay.
