US Virgin Islands vs Puerto Rico: which suits your week
Choosing between the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico is choosing how big a week you want. Neither needs a passport, and both sit under one hurricane season. Puerto Rico is a big island with a capital city and lower prices; St. John and St. Thomas are small and quiet, with a national park and the sea at the door.
| Passport | None for a US citizen, either place USA.gov lists Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands among the territories a citizen visits without one (updated March 31, 2026). The British Virgin Islands, a ferry from St. Thomas, need one. |

| Hurricane season | June 1 to November 30, both NOAA's National Hurricane Center climatology, read October 2026: the peak is September 10 and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. One forecast office, the National Weather Service in San Juan, covers both. |
| Between them | 68 miles, San Juan to St. Thomas Great-circle distance between the airports, computed from their coordinates. Cape Air flies it daily and JetBlue is on the Virgin Islands Port Authority's list (October 2026). No scheduled passenger ferry that we know of. |
US Virgin Islands vs Puerto Rico: what the choice changes
The choice changes the scale of everything: the island, the drive, the town at the end of it and the bill. Puerto Rico has three million people, a capital city and a west coast two and a half hours from the airport; St. Thomas and St. John together would fit inside Vieques. What the two share is the paperwork, the hurricane season and the sea between them.

| Hurricane season | June 1 to November 30 | The same |
Land from the US Census Bureau's 2024 gazetteer and our measurement of the islands' estate maps; airlines from the two airports' lists, October 2026; nightly rates the twelve-month average to September 2026 across every rental listing, from the market data we hold; cruise counts the USVI Bureau of Economic Research's and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company's.
There is no answer that suits everyone, only a trade. Puerto Rico gives you range: a city, a rainforest, surf on one coast and calm water on another, and a rental bill a third of St. John's. The Virgin Islands give you less of everything except water, and a house that looks at it.
Getting there: a hub airport against a small one
San Juan is the easier flight from almost anywhere; St. Thomas is the shorter trip once you land. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport lists eighteen airlines, seven of them mainland carriers (American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and United), beside Air Canada, Iberia from Madrid, Avianca, Copa and the island hoppers; it publishes who flies, not a route list, so the city pairs are on each airline's schedule. Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas lists six mainland airlines from fourteen US cities, only Miami, New York JFK and Houston flown every day and four routes one Saturday flight a week, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority as of October 2026. The flights guide has the table.
The two airports are 68 miles apart and Cape Air flies between them daily. The difference is what happens after the carousel: Old San Juan is 22 minutes from its airport by our measurement, a St. Thomas house 28 minutes at the median, and a St. John house a taxi, a ferry and another drive, about 75 minutes of travel before any wait for the boat.
Suits Puerto Rico: a home city without a nonstop to St. Thomas, a late arrival, a long weekend. Suits the Virgin Islands: a week, when the extra legs are a small share of it.
Passports, language, driving side and the size of the drive
Neither needs a passport. USA.gov lists Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands among the territories a US citizen visits on the ID they would carry to Denver, as of March 2026.
The language is the first real difference. Spanish and English are both official languages of Puerto Rico's government under its Law 1 of 1993, and Spanish is the language of the street, the menu and the road sign, with English wherever tourism is; the Virgin Islands are English-speaking. The second is the car: traffic in the Virgin Islands keeps to the left, per the CDC and the National Park Service, and Puerto Rico drives on the right as the mainland does.
Then the scale. Puerto Rico's main island is 3,425 square miles by the US Census Bureau's gazetteer; St. Thomas is 31 and St. John 20 by our measurement of their estate maps. On the islands a car is recommended almost wherever you stay, the median drive from a neighborhood to town is 17 minutes on both, and more than half the areas we measured are steep. In Puerto Rico the drives are long, flat and fast, on toll highways:
| From San Juan's airport, by car | Measured October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Old San Juan | 22 minutes, 8 miles |
| La Monserrate, the public beach at Luquillo | 45 minutes, 26 miles, tolls |
| The Ceiba ferry terminal, for Vieques and Culebra | 65 minutes, 40 miles, tolls |
| Rincón, on the west coast | 2 hours 34 minutes, 95 miles, tolls |
Measured on the road network on October 22, 2026, in typical traffic; add time at San Juan's rush hours. San Juan also has a choice the islands lack: Uber, which the airport names as the one ride-share company in Puerto Rico, with pickup zones at both terminals, and taxis at fares the Puerto Rico Tourism Company regulates. On St. Thomas and St. John the taxi is a shared van at a tariff the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission sets, and the rental jeep is the week.
Beaches: small bays against public balnearios
The Virgin Islands' beaches are small and close together; Puerto Rico's are long and far apart. On St. John the North Shore beaches sit inside the Virgin Islands National Park, which holds almost 58 percent of the island's land per the National Park Service: Hawksnest is 8 minutes from Cruz Bay by car, Trunk Bay 13, Cinnamon Bay 17 and Maho Bay 18. We have measured 18 beaches on St. John and 13 on St. Thomas, and by our snorkeling read 13 of the St. John beaches and 6 of the St. Thomas ones rate 4 on a scale of 5, with reef a swim from the sand.
Puerto Rico's beach day is a different shape. Its best-known beaches are balnearios, public bathing beaches with parking, lifeguards and facilities run by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources: La Monserrate at Luquillo, Seven Seas at Fajardo, Boquerón in the southwest and Sun Bay on Vieques among them, plus Flamenco on Culebra, which the municipality keeps. They are wide, busy on weekends with islanders as well as visitors, and reached by highway; Luquillo is 45 minutes from the airport by our measurement. Reef snorkeling of the St. John kind is mostly a boat trip in Puerto Rico, by our read. We have not measured its beaches, so this page does not score them.
Suits Puerto Rico: a surf coast, a long walk on wide sand, a beach with a lifeguard and a kiosk. Suits the Virgin Islands: a different cove every day, and snorkeling from the sand.
Villas, nightly rates and what a week costs
A villa week costs about three times as much on St. John as in Puerto Rico, on the market data we hold, and the house is a different kind of house. Neither government publishes a nightly rate for rental homes and Puerto Rico publishes no count of them; the Puerto Rico Tourism Company's statistics cover the hotels and inns it endorses, which ran 77 percent full at an average $325 a night in the first half of 2026. So the comparison is ours:
| Twelve months to September 2026 | St. John | St. Thomas | Puerto Rico | Vieques and Culebra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short-term rental listings | 1,389 | 2,874 | 8,505 | 1,188 |
| With three bedrooms or more | 538 | 608 | 2,920 | 295 |
| Average nightly rate, all listings | $635 | $387 | $191 | $238 |
| Occupancy | 63% | 56% | 48% | 51% |
| Seven nights at the average | $4,445 | $2,709 | $1,337 | $1,666 |
The averages mix studios with six-bedroom houses, so they say what a market charges, not what your house will. Puerto Rico's is pulled down by thousands of San Juan apartments; St. John's is pulled up by the opposite, since 538 of its 1,389 listings have three bedrooms or more, the highest share of the four, because the island's rental stock is mostly whole houses on the hill.
Add the tax: 12.5 percent of the room rate on any stay under 90 days in the Virgin Islands, villa or hotel alike, per the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue; 7 percent on a short-term rental in Puerto Rico under Act 272 of 2003, per the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. On a villa listed here you see the owner's nightly rate for your dates before you write, and the owner confirms the total with tax and cleaning fee. There is no service fee.
Hurricane season is one season for both
The season is the same: June 1 to November 30, with the peak on September 10 and most of the activity between mid-August and mid-October, per NOAA's National Hurricane Center. The two sit 68 miles apart on the same storm track, and one forecast office, the National Weather Service in San Juan, watches both. 2017 made the point. Irma's southern eyewall crossed St. Thomas and St. John on September 6 and passed just north of mainland Puerto Rico; two weeks later Maria's eyewall crossed St. Croix around midnight and the storm came ashore at Yabucoa, on Puerto Rico's southeast corner, at about 6:15 on the morning of September 20 as a category 4 with 155 mph winds, per the National Weather Service.
In the 34 seasons from 1991 to 2024, 19 tropical systems passed within 100 km of St. John and 10 were hurricanes at the time, by our count from NOAA's storm-track record; we have not run the same count for Puerto Rico, and nothing in the record suggests it would read as the safer place. What its size gives is room: a storm can hit one coast and spare another, and the islands have no inland. On either side, buy travel insurance before a storm is named and read the cancellation policy in full. The hurricane season guide has the month-by-month record.
A city, its nightlife and the cruise crowds
San Juan is a capital city and the Virgin Islands have no city at all, and no amount of writing around it changes a week. Puerto Rico has 3.3 million people; the whole US Virgin Islands have 87,000, and St. John 3,881 at the 2020 count. In San Juan dinner is a city's choice, from the blue cobbles of Old San Juan to the bars around La Placita in Santurce, and the night runs as late as you do. On St. John the night is Cruz Bay's bars and a short list of restaurants, and Coral Bay closes early; on St. Thomas it is Red Hook, Frenchtown and a quiet Charlotte Amalie once the shops shut. The eat-and-drink pages list what is open, with hours, and they are short lists on purpose.
The crowds come on different terms. Ships tie up in the middle of Old San Juan, 1.92 million cruise passengers in the fiscal year to June 2026 on 653 calls, per the Puerto Rico Tourism Company's table of Ports Authority figures, which may be revised, so the old city fills on a day with two or three ships in and empties when they sail. St. Thomas took 1.55 million in calendar 2025, per the USVI Bureau of Economic Research, at Havensight and Crown Bay in Charlotte Amalie, and the first half of 2026 ran 40 percent ahead; Magens Bay and the shops feel it, the East End less so. No ship ties up at St. John; its day-trippers come over on the ferry and are gone by the last boat.
Suits Puerto Rico: anyone for whom the evening is half the trip. Suits the Virgin Islands: anyone who wants it dark and quiet by nine.
The islands next door: the BVI, Vieques and Culebra
Each has a smaller set of islands beside it, and the border is the difference. From St. Thomas the British Virgin Islands are a ferry ride east and another country at the dock: a passport book or a US passport card for every traveler, an online form before you sail, and boats from Charlotte Amalie to Road Town four times a day in November 2026, the first at 9 am and the last back at 3:15 pm, per the BVI Ports Authority, whose calendar changes each month. The which-island guide weighs Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke.
Puerto Rico's small islands are domestic. Vieques and Culebra lie off the east coast, 51 and 12 square miles by the Census gazetteer, with Sun Bay, Flamenco and a bioluminescent bay among the reasons people go. The public ferry leaves from Ceiba, 65 minutes from the airport by our measurement; its fares were revised in 2026, so check the operator's page and book ahead. Small planes fly from San Juan too, Vieques Air Link, Cape Air and Air Sunshine among the carriers on the airport's list. No passport, no customs form, and the same 7 percent room tax.
Suits the Virgin Islands: a sailing week, or a second trip that wants a real border. Suits Puerto Rico: an island-hop without the paperwork.
Who should pick Puerto Rico, and who the Virgin Islands
Pick by the week, then check the dates.
| If this matters most | Choose | Because |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest nightly rate | Puerto Rico | $191 average against $387 and $635, twelve months to September 2026 |
| A city in the evening | Puerto Rico | San Juan; the islands have none |
| The widest choice of flights | Puerto Rico | Seven mainland airlines on the San Juan list against six on St. Thomas's, where four routes are one Saturday flight a week |
| The shortest trip from the plane | St. Thomas | 28 minutes to the median house |
| Beaches inside a national park | St. John | Almost 58 percent of the island, per the National Park Service |
| Snorkeling from the sand | St. John | 13 of its 18 measured beaches rate 4 of 5 by our read |
| A whole house as the norm | St. John | 538 of 1,389 listings have three bedrooms or more |
| An island-hop without a passport | Puerto Rico | Vieques and Culebra are domestic; the BVI are not |
| Driving on the right | Puerto Rico | The Virgin Islands keep left |
Puerto Rico for a first Caribbean trip with children who need more than a beach, for a couple who want a city and a coast in one week, for a budget a Virgin Islands winter rate will not stretch to, and for the driver who would rather have a highway than a hill. The Virgin Islands for the week that is the water: snorkeling before breakfast, a different bay each day, a house with the sea in every window. If the party is split, Puerto Rico's range settles more arguments; if everyone agrees on the sea, St. John settles it. The villas here show each owner's rate for your dates.
Questions about the Virgin Islands
Puerto Rico vs US Virgin Islands: which is cheaper for a week?
Puerto Rico, by a wide margin on the rental data we hold. The average nightly rate across every short-term rental listing in the twelve months to September 2026 was $191 in Puerto Rico against $387 on St. Thomas and $635 on St. John, and Puerto Rico's room tax is 7 percent against the Virgin Islands' 12.5. A big house on Puerto Rico's coast narrows the gap; a studio on St. Thomas widens it.
Do you need a passport for Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands?
No, for a US citizen, in either place: USA.gov lists both among the territories a citizen visits without one, as of March 2026, so the flight is domestic and an ID the TSA accepts is enough. A passport comes in only if the trip crosses into the British Virgin Islands from St. Thomas, where every traveler needs a passport book or a US passport card. Vieques and Culebra, off Puerto Rico, are domestic.
St. Thomas vs Puerto Rico: which is easier to get to?
San Juan has more flights, St. Thomas the shorter day. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport lists eighteen airlines, seven of them US mainline carriers; Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas lists six mainland airlines from fourteen cities, only Miami, New York JFK and Houston every day, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority as of October 2026. Once you land, a St. Thomas house is 28 minutes away at the median and Old San Juan 22 minutes from its airport, by our measurement.
St. John vs Puerto Rico: which has the better beaches?
They are different beaches. St. John's are small bays inside a national park, 8 to 18 minutes from Cruz Bay by car, with reef a swim from the sand; 13 of the 18 we have measured rate 4 of 5 for snorkeling by our read. Puerto Rico's best known are wide public balnearios with lifeguards and parking, Luquillo, Seven Seas, Boquerón and Flamenco on Culebra among them, reached by highway and busy at weekends. For snorkeling from the beach, St. John; for a long beach with a surf break and a kiosk, Puerto Rico.
How far are the US Virgin Islands from Puerto Rico?
About 68 miles between the airports, San Juan to St. Thomas, by great-circle distance computed from their coordinates. Cape Air flies the route daily and JetBlue lists it too, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority as of October 2026, so a week can take in both. We know of no scheduled passenger ferry between them; the crossing is a flight.
Facts checked against USA.gov, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the US Census Bureau and NOAA. Checked October 2026.
