Coral Bay, St. John
The east side of St. John, 28 minutes from the Cruz Bay ferry over the mountain road. Slower and more spread out than Cruz Bay, with a handful of bars and restaurants on the harbor and empty beaches on the road to the East End.
Estates and places here: Carolina, Emmaus, Eden, Zootenval, Fortsberg, Browns Bay, Miland, Ushers Quay, Johnson Bay. These are the names on addresses and deeds; a villa in any of them is listed under Coral Bay.
Staying in Coral Bay
Coral Bay is the other St. John. The harbor and the loose settlement around it sit on the east side of the island, 28 minutes from the Cruz Bay ferry dock over Centerline Road, and that drive decides whether to stay here. Everything that arrives on St. John arrives at Cruz Bay: the passenger ferry from Red Hook, hourly until 10 pm, the car barge at the Theovald Moorehead terminal, the National Park visitor center and Starfish Market, the island's full grocery. A day that starts at Trunk Bay or ends at a Cruz Bay restaurant carries an hour of driving, and the 10 pm ferry puts a late arrival on Centerline Road in the dark.
In return you get room, and a different island. The houses spread around the harbor and up the valleys behind it, and by our measurement the ground here rolls rather than climbs, gentler than the ridge you cross to reach it. The waterfront in Coral Bay, St. John is a few bars and restaurants, not a town: Skinny Legs, at 9901 Estate Emmaus, serves 11 am to 8 pm daily by its own site as of October 2026. Dolphin Market Coral Bay, in the Cocoloba Mall on Route 107, is open 7 am to 11 pm every day by its own listing and has an ATM, which answers the question most people ask before they drive east. A group that cooks most nights will find it covers the week; the full shop is still Starfish Market in Cruz Bay, 7 am to 9 pm, so fill the car there first.
The south shore's park beaches are on this side. Salt Pond Bay is free per the National Park Service, 41 minutes from Cruz Bay town to its lot on Route 107 and a 10 minute walk down to the sand. Lameshur Bay's lot is 45 minutes from Cruz Bay, the park recommends four-wheel drive for the rocky last stretch, and the federal rebuild of that road was still waiting on an award as of 8 October 2026. Brown Bay, the nearest sand to the harbor by our measurement, is 5 minutes by car, and east of the harbor the road runs out at Hansen Bay, outside the park, 39 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Rent a car, and ask the owner which one. The roads roll, but a few driveways here measure far steeper than the road they leave, and the track to Lameshur is a different question again. VITRAN's Route 109 bus leaves the Cruz Bay dock for Coral Bay six times a day on the Department of Public Works' table, checked October 2026, 6:25 am to 6:40 pm, and two runs go on to Salt Pond; it is a way into town for one person on one morning, not a way to run a house for a week. A taxi from the dock to Coral Bay is $25 for one person or $15 each for two or more under the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff, in force since October 2022, plus $3 a bag. The tradeoff: Coral Bay is the wrong choice for four nights built around Trunk Bay and Cruz Bay dinners, and the right one for a second trip that eats in. Johns Folly, the coast south of the harbor toward Salt Pond at 38 minutes from the dock, and the East End, where the road ends at Hansen Bay at 41, share this side and have their own pages; both measure steep where Coral Bay measures rolling.
Suits a second or third trip, a long stay, and a group that cooks more nights than it eats out.
Getting around
Coral Bay needs a car: the roads roll rather than climb, every beach is a drive and Cruz Bay is 26 minutes by road.

Coral Bay has no public water main, so each house relies on its cistern and, when that runs low, on a water truck from Cruz Bay; ask the owner about a generator as well. One network's tower above the fire station covers most of the bay, by our read, but phones here often wander onto British Virgin Islands networks, so turn data roaming off.
