Shopping in St. John, USVI, from Mongoose Junction to Coral Bay

Shopping on St. John, USVI, is a small-town affair, and that is the appeal. Two clusters in Cruz Bay hold most of it: Wharfside, up the stairs from the ferry, and Mongoose Junction, a stone courtyard up North Shore Road. Coral Bay adds a few more. Come for hook bracelets, sail bags and island art, not bargains.

Mongoose Junction, the stone courtyard on North Shore Road

Mongoose Junction is the one most people mean when they say shopping on St. John. Local architect Glen Speer designed it in stone and mahogany after the island's old Danish plantation buildings, and its directory lists close to twenty shops around courtyards and stairs, with a deli, a brewery tap room and a few restaurants between them. It is a short walk from the ferry dock, at the edge of town.

The center's own word on hours, as of October 2026: shops keep between 9 am and 9 pm, and most open 10 am to 6 pm. A few worth knowing by name, from their own sites:

For lunch between shops, the Cruz Bay eat-and-drink page lists the kitchens in the courtyard.

Wharfside Village, up the stairs from the ferry

Wharfside is the first thing you walk past off the ferry from Red Hook: a cluster of shops and beach bars on the water beside the dock. The center publishes no directory we could read, so we name only the shops whose own sites place them here this month.

St. John Spice has been the anchor since 1999. Its directions are the clearest on the island: five steps off the passenger dock, turn right, and up the brick stairs. Shelves of Caribbean spices, rubs and hot sauces, rum cakes, and a vanilla extract the shop makes with Caribbean rum. As of October 2026 it opens 9 am to 9 pm every day but Saturday, when it closes at 5 pm. Vibe Jewelry keeps its second shop at Wharfside Landing, open 9 am to 9 pm daily.

Wharfside suits the last hour before the boat: the shops sit between the bars and the dock, so a spice bag or a bracelet is the final errand of the trip rather than the first.

The rest of Cruz Bay, around The Marketplace

Beyond the two centers, Cruz Bay's shops are spread along the streets behind the dock and out to The Marketplace, the shopping building that also holds Starfish Market, the island's big supermarket. Jolly Dog Trading Co., a St. John brand since 1997, runs a shop there with its sister jewelry line ZEMI Island Designs: Jolly Dog's own T-shirts, hats and gifts beside ZEMI's hook bracelets and silver.

Most guests reach it by car on a grocery run, and the shop is an easy stop on the way to the villa.

Coral Bay's shops, at the quiet end of the island

Coral Bay shopping is a short list and an afternoon's detour. The harbor is 28 minutes by car from the Cruz Bay ferry, and there is nothing like Mongoose Junction out here: a handful of shops between the bars and the harbor.

Jolly Dog's Coral Bay store is at Isola Shoppes, with ZEMI next door. Further east, on the East End, Sloop Jones has painted tropical clothing, banners and signs by hand since 1986, in small batches in a garden studio, so a color can sell out in a day and go back on the painting schedule. The studio is closed Sundays all year and asks you to call for hours, as of October 2026.

If you are staying in Coral Bay, these are your nearby shops; if you are not, combine them with lunch on the Coral Bay eat-and-drink page, where most kitchens close by 8 pm.

What to buy that was made on St. John

The island's real souvenirs are the things made here, and most of them fit in a carry-on.

  • The hook bracelet. A slim bangle that closes with a hook, the island's signature piece. Caravan Gallery calls its version the original St. John hook bracelet; ZEMI and Vibe Jewelry make their own.
  • Sloop Jones clothing. Tropical clothing painted by hand on the East End, so no two pieces match exactly.
  • A Sailsack. Bags and totes cut from retired sails that worked these waters.
  • St. John Spice's kitchen. Its rum cake, the vanilla extract it makes with rum, and spice blends you will not find at home.
  • Island art. Bajo el Sol hangs a new exhibition most months and hosts readings by Virgin Islands writers; Bamboula carries island-made jewelry beside its Haitian art.

A T-shirt from Jolly Dog or the St. John Brewers shop at Mongoose Junction is the easy gift. The hook bracelet is the one people wear for years.

Island prices and the slow season on St. John

Expect to pay more than on the mainland. Nearly everything sold on St. John comes by sea, usually through St. Thomas, and the price carries the trip; by our read, the island-made goods are the fair buys and the imported beachwear is not.

St. John is not a duty-free shopping destination on St. Thomas's scale either. Little Switzerland, the duty-free watch and jewelry chain best known on St. Thomas, has a shop at Mongoose Junction, and a few jewelers carry duty-free pieces, but there is no district of them. The customs allowance is the same on both islands, $1,600 a person per US Customs and Border Protection as of October 2026, so a serious watch or jewelry purchase is a day trip to the shops on Charlotte Amalie harbor, covered on the St. Thomas duty-free shopping page.

Late summer is the other catch. Jolly Dog usually closes from mid-August to early October, and Caravan Gallery closes at 6 pm rather than 8 roughly from August through November, per their own pages as of October 2026; check with the shop before you go. By our read, smaller shops follow the same rhythm without always posting it, so in September call ahead before you drive to one.
