The St. John Celebration, the island's carnival
The Department of Tourism and its Division of Festivals run the Celebration, and the tourism office describes it as the island's carnival, marking the end of slavery on July 3, 1848, and the Fourth of July together. In 2026 it opened June 14 with a steel pan night at Franklin A. Powell Sr. Park; Celebration Village opened June 28, J'ouvert started at sunrise on July 3, and the parade and fireworks closed it in Cruz Bay on July 4.
The 2027 program had not been announced as of October 2026. The closing week runs from late June to July 4; confirm with the tourism office before you fix flights.
8 Tuff Miles, Cruz Bay to Coral Bay on foot
8 Tuff Miles is a road race across the island, run, jogged or walked from the National Park visitor center in Cruz Bay to Coral Bay. The race's own site gives the course as 8.38 miles, starting about five feet above the sea and topping out at 999 feet before it drops to the finish. The next race is February 27, 2027, starting at 7:15 am, and registration is open on the race's site as of October 2026. A non-resident adult entry is $100 from October 1 to December 30, 2026, and $125 after that, per the race's registration page.
The finish is on the far side of the island from the ferry, so plan the ride back to Cruz Bay before race morning.
The Power Swim and the park's season
Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, the park's charity partner, runs the rest of the calendar a visitor can join. Joe Kessler's Beach to Beach Power Swim is held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, and registration for 2026 closed before the swim. In March 2026 the park also held a Folklife Festival Revival, on March 27 and 28, for the country's 250th anniversary.
The parade-day roads on July 4
The tradeoff of a July visit: on parade morning in 2026 the Police Department closed the road from Mongoose Junction (Route 20) to the North Shore at 8 a.m. until the parade ended, with parking at the public lot in the Gravel Pit. Beach plans on July 4 work from the other side of that closure. The territory's legal holidays, Transfer Day among them, are on the St. Thomas events page.
