Sapphire Bay, St. Thomas
Sapphire Bay is the shore on the East End of St. Thomas where the Sapphire Beach condos look across the water to St. John, with more condominiums on the slope behind. It suits a week on the beach with the St. John ferry close by. The Red Hook ferry is 11 minutes by car from the middle of it.
Staying in Sapphire Bay
Most stays in Sapphire Bay are a condo, not a house. Our property list holds three condominium complexes on this bay: the Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina along the sand, Sapphire Village up the slope behind it, and Crystal Cove. By our measurement the middle of the area sits 50 meters from Sapphire Beach, so a week here is built around the water in front of the building rather than around a drive to it.
For a guest, that means one owner's unit inside a shared complex. Every claimed listing on this site is placed by its owner or the owner's manager, so the kitchen, the beds and the view are that owner's, and the questions about them go to the owner, not to a front desk. The grounds and the walk to the sand are shared with every other unit's guests. Ask the owner which building the unit is in and how far it is from the beach; on a slope, the answer decides the view and the stairs.
Rent a car, as almost everywhere on St. Thomas. Our measurement rates the ground rolling, not steep; from the middle of the area Charlotte Amalie is 24 minutes by car and Cyril E. King airport 39. The ferry is the reason to be at this end of the island. The Red Hook terminal is 11 minutes away, and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay takes 20 minutes at $8.15 an adult, hourly from Red Hook, with the last boat back at 10 pm from Cruz Bay per the Virgin Islands Department of Public Works as of September 2026. A day on St. John needs no planning beyond that last boat. The car barges leave from Red Hook too, $65 a car one way on the Big Red Barge and Love City Car Ferries rates pages, the last between 6 and 7:30 pm depending on the company, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority's schedule as of October 2026.
The other East End beaches are short drives, measured from the middle of the area. Lindquist Beach is 4 minutes north, and it is shut: the Magens Bay Authority closed Smith Bay Park for sargassum on July 9, 2026 until further notice, the St. Thomas Source reported it on July 8, 2026, and as of October 8, 2026 we had found no notice that it has reopened. Secret Harbour Beach, south past Red Hook in Estate Nazareth, and Coki Beach, at Coki Point on the northeast shore, are 9 minutes each, and Vessup Beach 10. Bolongo Bay, on the south coast, is 15, and Hull Bay, on the north coast, 28. Magens Bay, on the north side, is 24 minutes, at $7 a visitor per the Magens Bay Authority as of October 2026.
The tradeoff is distance and company. Arriving or leaving, the airport is the far side of the island, and an evening in Charlotte Amalie is a drive both ways. The beach in front of the units is not yours: the sand is public shoreline under the Coastal Zone Management Act, per the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, so it is shared with everyone who drives in. Red Hook lies south toward the ferry, and Smith Bay and Point Pleasant run north along the same road.
Suits a couple or a small family who want the sand outside the door and a day on St. John within easy reach.
Getting around
Sapphire Bay needs a car: the roads roll rather than climb, the nearest sand is 9 minutes by car and Charlotte Amalie is 24 minutes by road.
| Drive to | Minutes |

Sale listings in 2026 show an automatic generator at the Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina and at Sapphire Village; at Sapphire Bay West, which makes its own water by reverse osmosis, the backup runs the water and the outside lights, so ask what it powers in your unit. By our read, a phone works well enough on this shore facing St. John.

Questions about Sapphire Bay
- How much do the Sapphire Beach condos cost?
- Each condo is priced by its owner, so there is no single rate for the resort. The nightly rate on each listing here comes from the owner's calendar where the owner has linked one, and the owner answers questions about the unit directly. Compare the listings side by side rather than looking for one price for the whole resort.
- Where is Sapphire Bay, St. Thomas?
- Sapphire Bay is on the East End of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, off Smith Bay Road north of Red Hook, facing St. John. From the middle of the area the Red Hook ferry is 11 minutes by car, Charlotte Amalie 24 and Cyril E. King airport 39, by our measurement.
- Who rents the Sapphire Beach condos?
- The owners. Every claimed condo on this site is placed by its owner or the owner's manager, who sets the rate and answers the inquiry. The Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina, Sapphire Village and Crystal Cove are all on this bay, so check which complex and which building a listing is in before you compare two of them.
- Are the Sapphire Beach condos on the beach?
- The resort's buildings stand behind Sapphire Beach, and by our measurement the middle of the area is 50 meters from the sand. Sapphire Village sits further up the slope, so a unit there is a walk down. The beach itself is public under the territory's coastal zone rules, not reserved for owners' guests.
- How do you get to Sapphire Bay from the airport?
- Cyril E. King airport is 39 minutes by car, on the far side of the island. A taxi to the Sapphire Beach Resort is $23 for one person or $17 each for two or more, the same as to Red Hook, on the Virgin Islands Taxicab Commission's tariff in force since October 2022, plus $3 a bag. Most guests rent a car instead, since the other East End beaches, Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie are all drives from here.
