US Virgin Islands family vacation

Written by Virgin Islands Villas · Updated Oct 10, 2026 · How this was checked

A US Virgin Islands family vacation starts with one choice: St. Thomas, where the plane lands, or St. John, a taxi and a 20-minute ferry beyond it. We measured every area on both islands for flat ground, a beach on foot and the drive to town. Below: the islands compared, where to stay, calm water, the ferry.

St. John or St. Thomas for a family?

St. Thomas is the easier island with small children, and St. John is the one with the park. The deciding facts are the ones a family feels on day one: the airport is on St. Thomas, the ground is flatter there, and Magens Bay lists lifeguards, which no St. John beach does.

The figures are our own measurements of every area, September 2026, and the authorities' pages as of October 2026. St. Croix is the third US island; this site covers the first two.

Read the table as a trade. St. Thomas gives you shorter transfers and flatter streets for a stroller. St. John gives you the Virgin Islands National Park and a quieter island, and asks for the ferry and steeper roads in return.

Getting children from the airport to the house

On St. Thomas it is one taxi from Cyril E. King airport to the villa. On St. John it is three legs: 36 minutes by taxi to the Red Hook dock, as we measured it, then 20 minutes on the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay, then a taxi or your rental car to the house.

A child aged 2 to 11 rides the ferry for $1 one way and a child under 2 rides free, per Transportation Services of St. John as of October 2026.

The tradeoff: with a late flight and tired children, the ferry is the leg that can go wrong, because the boat leaves on time and the taxi from the airport may not. Book the flight that lands in daylight.

Where to stay with kids: flat ground and sand

St. Thomas has what St. John lacks: three areas that measure flat, Frenchtown, Magens Bay and Point Pleasant, and five with a beach on foot. A family that wants a stroller on level ground and sand within a walk has its choice on that island, not the other.

On St. John, nothing measures flat. Cruz Bay is the one area where the ferry, the shops and a beach are all a walk, on rolling ground. Peter Bay puts a North Shore beach about a five-minute walk from the center of the area, on steep roads about 16 minutes from the ferry. Coral Bay is about 28 minutes from the ferry, so shop in Cruz Bay before you drive east.

What steep means with children: a driveway a rental sedan may not climb, and a walk to the beach that is a climb back with a toddler on your hip. Our measurements found a car needed or recommended in every area on both islands but one, Estate Contant beside Cruz Bay, so plan for one.

Calm water, and where a lifeguard is on duty

Few beaches here have a lifeguard, so calm water and an adult within reach are what you rely on.

Maho BaySt. JohnClear and calm, flat beach, named for familiesNone published
Francis BaySt. JohnCalm water, named for beginnersNone listed
Trunk BaySt. JohnSnorkel trail; $5 a person 16 and overNone on duty

The Magens Bay Authority describes the water as calm with a sandy bottom and lists lifeguards, with no hours published, as of October 2026; children under 12 enter free and adults pay $7. The National Park Service calls Maho Bay clear and calm, with a flat beach reached straight from the road, which we measured at 18 minutes from Cruz Bay by car, and says no lifeguards are on duty at Trunk Bay. A child under 16 enters Trunk Bay free.

All-inclusive family resorts or a villa

There is at least one all-inclusive plan in the territory. The Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on St. Thomas sells an all-inclusive plan of three meals and drinks, top-shelf brands excluded, and has offered one since 1989, by its own site as of October 2026. Its home page lists no children's club and no children's rates; ask the resort.

This site lists villas, not resorts. A villa trades the meal plan for a whole house with its own kitchen, and an owner who answers your questions before you book. The tradeoff is that nobody cooks for you: in Coral Bay, the full grocery is back in Cruz Bay.

The sun and the reef with children

With children, build the day around the CDC's shade hours: the beach in the morning and the late afternoon, and the middle of the day at the house. In the water, the National Park Service names sea urchins on rocky entries and asks for reef-safe sunscreen; water shoes answer the first.

Questions people ask

Which US Virgin Island is best for families?
St. Thomas, for most families with small children: the airport is on the island, three of its 23 areas measure flat against none of St. John's 21, and Magens Bay lists lifeguards. St. John suits a family with older children who want the national park and can manage the ferry and steep roads. St. Croix is the third island, and this site does not cover it.
Is St. Thomas safe for families?
For a family, the practical risks are the ordinary ones: the car left with valuables in it, the midday sun and the water. Lock the villa and the car, keep the children in shade in the middle of the day, and watch for sea urchins on rocky entries, which the National Park Service names. Swim near a staffed lifeguard stand, as at Magens Bay, where not every stand is staffed.
Are there all-inclusive resorts in the US Virgin Islands?
Yes, on St. Thomas at least: the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort sells an all-inclusive plan of three meals and drinks, top-shelf brands excluded, and has since 1989, by its own site as of October 2026. It publishes no children's rates on its home page. This site lists villas, which trade the meal plan for a kitchen and a house to yourselves.

Facts checked against Transportation Services of St. John, the National Park Service, the Magens Bay Authority, the CDC and the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. Checked October 2026.
