The best Virgin Island to visit, by the week you want

Written by Virgin Islands Villas · Updated Oct 10, 2026 · How this was checked

The best Virgin Island to visit on a first trip is St. John or St. Thomas, and the choice turns on the ferry. St. Thomas puts most houses 28 minutes from the airport; St. John adds a taxi, an hourly boat and a drive, about 75 minutes before any wait. The British Virgin Islands add a passport and a boat.

36 minutes by taxi to Red Hook and a median 18 minutes from the Cruz Bay dock to the St. John areas, both measured on island roads (2026-09-15, 2026-09-16), plus the 20 minute crossing from the timetable. The boat is hourly, so the ferry guide says allow 90 minutes from the airport door to the boat.

St. Thomas vs St. John: what the choice changes

The choice changes how you arrive and what is outside the door, and very little else. Both islands are US territory and share one airport, one weather record and one hurricane season, and the measured drive from a neighborhood to town is the same on both, a median of 17 minutes. What differs is the water between them and the land on the far side of it.

Drive times measured on island roads 2026-09-15 and 2026-09-16; town is Cruz Bay on St. John and Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, and the town areas themselves, with Lovango Cay, have no drive to town, which is why that row counts 19 and 22. Rain from NOAA's 1991–2020 normals.

There is no answer that suits everyone, only a trade. St. Thomas gives you the shortest day of travel and the most choice once you land. St. John gives you a national park for a back yard and asks for a boat ride each way in return.

Getting there: one leg or three

St. Thomas is where every flight lands, so the trip to a St. Thomas house is one taxi ride: the median is 28 minutes from Cyril E. King airport, and the closest, Frenchtown, is 12. The farthest, on the East End, is 47.

A St. John house is three legs. The taxi from the airport to Red Hook is 36 minutes, the crossing to Cruz Bay is 20 on the timetable, and the median house is another 18 minutes from the dock: about 75 minutes of travel, three legs added, before any wait for the boat. The boat runs about once an hour on the Transportation Services of St. John timetable, as of October 2026, so a flight that lands at the wrong moment can add up to an hour on the Red Hook dock, which is why the St. John ferry guide says to allow 90 minutes from the airport door to the boat. Coral Bay and the East End of St. John sit at the far end of that clock, 28 to 44 minutes past the dock.

The tradeoff runs the other way once you arrive. On St. Thomas the airport, the cruise piers and Charlotte Amalie are part of the island you stay on. On St. John the crossing is the line between all of that and the park.

Suits St. Thomas: a long weekend, a late flight, anyone who would rather not ride a boat with luggage. Suits St. John: a week or more, where the long first day is a small share of the stay.

Which island has the better beaches for a first visit?

St. John, if the measure is beaches with nothing built on them. Almost 58 percent of the island's land is national park, per the National Park Service, and the North Shore beaches sit inside it: Hawksnest is 8 minutes from Cruz Bay by car, Trunk Bay 13, Cinnamon Bay 17 and Maho Bay 18, measured to each parking lot.

St. Thomas, if the measure is a beach within an eight minute walk of the house. In 5 of its 23 areas the sand is that close, and Magens Bay on the north side is 14 minutes from Charlotte Amalie by car. St. John has a beach on foot in 7 of its 21 areas, but five of those seven are away from the North Shore, on smaller bays.

Suits St. John: snorkeling and a different beach every day. Suits St. Thomas: one beach, every day, from the door.

Is the weather different on each island?

No, and the tables say so plainly. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) keeps temperature normals for one station on either island, at Cyril E. King airport, so the weather pages for St. John and St. Thomas print the same 84 degree February and the same 90 degree August. The islands are about four miles apart across Pillsbury Sound; a forecast for one is a forecast for both.

The rain gauges differ a little. NOAA's Coral Bay gauge on St. John averages 45.9 inches a year and the East End gauge on St. Thomas 40.9, both over 1991 to 2020, and both put February and March among the driest months. The storm counts differ too: 19 tropical systems passed within 100 km of St. John in the 34 seasons to 2024 and 17 within 100 km of Charlotte Amalie, by NOAA's historical storm-track record. That is the same weather counted from two centers, not a safer island. Hurricane season is one season for the whole territory.

BVI vs USVI: what the border adds

The British Virgin Islands are a short boat ride east and a different country at the dock. Every traveler must present a passport to enter and to depart, per the BVI Tourist Board as of October 2026, and since January 1, 2025 the immigration and customs form is filled in online before you arrive, with a photo of the passport page. Coming back, you go through US immigration. None of this applies between St. Thomas and St. John, which is a domestic crossing.

The boats are the real constraint. The BVI Tourist Board posts a low-season calendar for Charlotte Amalie and Road Town and the regular timetable for Red Hook and West End; the regular one most years covers every route again from early November, so check the calendar for your week:

A last boat back at 3 or 4 in the afternoon is what makes a BVI day trip short. Tortola is the capital and the largest island, per the BVI Tourist Board; Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada are the other names on its list, reached by ferry or by boat. For a first trip with one flight in and one out, the US islands keep the day simple; the BVI suit a second trip, or a few nights on a boat.

Suits the BVI: a sailing week, a second trip, a passport already in the drawer.

Which islands make up the US Virgin Islands?

St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are the three main islands, with Water Island in the harbor off Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas and St. John are four miles apart and share the airport and the ferry. St. Croix lies to the south across open water; we have not measured it, and this page does not compare it.

How to choose between St. John and St. Thomas

Four questions settle most first trips.

If this matters mostChooseBecause
The shortest trip from the planeSt. Thomas28 minutes to the median house, one leg
Beaches inside a national parkSt. JohnAlmost 58 percent of its land, per the National Park Service
A beach on foot from the houseEither7 of 21 areas on St. John, 5 of 23 on St. Thomas
A passport-free weekEither US islandThe BVI need a passport each way

Then the car. On both islands a car is needed almost everywhere, and more than half the areas on each measure steep, so a jeep is the safer rental whichever you pick. The last thing to check is the clock on the day you land: a St. John house wants an afternoon arrival with a boat to spare; a St. Thomas house can take the late flight.

US or British Virgin Islands: which should you visit?
