How St. Thomas is laid out

St. Thomas is one long ridge running east to west, with the capital, Charlotte Amalie, on the harbor at the middle of the south shore. Cyril E. King Airport sits on the water just west of town, and Red Hook, where the boats to St. John leave, is at the far east end. The areas fall into seven groups around that line, from the West End past the airport to the East End around Red Hook, with Water Island a ferry ride off Crown Bay.

Which end you stay on shapes the week more than which bay. From Bordeaux on the West End the airport is 19 minutes by car and Red Hook 49; from Secret Harbour on the East End the numbers swap, Red Hook 9 minutes and the airport 40. A trip built around days on St. John belongs in the east. One built around an early flight home, or around town, can look west or over the ridge to the north, where Hull Bay is 12 minutes from Charlotte Amalie.

Getting across the island by car

The map makes St. Thomas look small, and the drive corrects it. The airport to the Red Hook terminal measures 36 minutes for 17 km, and the Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal to Red Hook 28, because every route either follows the harbor through town or climbs over the ridge. Traffic keeps to the left: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls the territory the only US jurisdiction to drive on the left.

The tradeoff in two numbers: the St. John boats leave from the end farthest from the airport, 36 minutes to Red Hook, and 47 from the East End area's pin, the longest airport drive of any area.

Ferries and cruise docks on the St. Thomas island map

Four waterfronts carry the visitors. The Urman Victor Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook is the St. John passenger ferry's dock, and the car barges load beside it at the Noel "Breeze" Boynes Car Ferry Dock, per the Virgin Islands Port Authority. The Edward Wilmoth Blyden IV Marine Terminal in Charlotte Amalie is the Port Authority's terminal for the boats to the British Virgin Islands, with customs inside, and the boat to Cruz Bay from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront sails two or three times a day as of October 2026.

Cruise ships tie up at two piers: the Austin "Babe" Monsanto Marine Terminal at Crown Bay, which the Port Authority runs, and the Havensight Dock at Long Bay, which the West Indian Company owns and operates. Next to it, the Port Authority's Crown Bay Cargo Port is where Inter Island Boat Services leaves for Cruz Bay, 8 minutes by car from the airport. For a villa guest headed to St. John, Red Hook is the one that matters.

Each pin is the middle of the houses that face that bay, and the minutes are measured from the pin to town by car, so a pin near town on the map can still be a steep drive. Tap an area on the map to see the estates that file to it.

Questions about the St. Thomas map

Where is St. Thomas on the map?

In the northeastern Caribbean, east of Puerto Rico. St. Thomas is the westernmost of the three main US Virgin Islands, with St. John across Pillsbury Sound to the east and St. Croix to the south across open water. Charlotte Amalie, the capital, sits at about 18.34 degrees north and 64.93 degrees west, on the island's south shore.

Where is St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, located on a map?

In the US Virgin Islands, a US territory rather than a state, so it sits on a map of the Caribbean, not of the fifty states. Its nearest neighbors to the east are St. John and then the British Virgin Islands, a British territory with its own customs. The National Park Service sends every St. John visitor through Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas, which is why most trips to either island start here.

Where is the airport on St. Thomas?

On the south shore just west of Charlotte Amalie: Cyril E. King Airport, run by the Virgin Islands Port Authority. By our measurement it is 12 minutes by car to the Charlotte Amalie ferry terminal, 8 minutes to Crown Bay and 36 minutes to the Red Hook terminal on the east end, where the St. John ferries leave.

Where do the ferries leave from on St. Thomas?

From three places. The St. John passenger ferries and the car barges leave Red Hook, on the east end. The British Virgin Islands boats use the Blyden terminal in Charlotte Amalie, and the town waterfront and Crown Bay each send a few boats a day to Cruz Bay, per the Port Authority's schedule as of October 2026.
