What the map shows
The map of St. John, USVI, is one town, two docks and two roads. Everything arrives through Cruz Bay: the passenger ferries land at the Loredon L. Boynes Sr. dock in the middle of town, and the car barges land at the Theovald E. Moorehead terminal on Enighed Pond, a short drive south, so a walk-on passenger and a car crossing from St. Thomas step off at different docks. From town, North Shore Road climbs east along the park beaches, Trunk Bay 13 minutes out, and rejoins Centerline Road before Coral Bay; Centerline Road takes the ridge straight to Coral Bay, 26 minutes from Cruz Bay by car.
The tradeoff the map hides: distance here is vertical. Both roads climb from sea level to the ridge and drop again to every bay, so a pin close to town can be a steep road in low gear. Fish Bay sits a short way west of town on the map and measures 17 minutes and steep, which is why the number beside each area below was measured by car from the area's pin rather than read off the map. The areas list carries the number; the map shows why. The beach index and the ferry guide hold the rest: which beaches charge a fee, and which boat to take.
Areas to stay on the St. John map
Each pin is the middle of the houses that face that bay, and the minutes are measured from the pin to town by car, so a pin near town on the map can still be a steep drive. Tap an area on the map to see the estates that file to it.

Questions about the St. John map
- Where is St. John on the map?
St. John is the easternmost of the three main US Virgin Islands, across Pillsbury Sound from the east end of St. Thomas, with Tortola in the British Virgin Islands beyond it to the east. The passenger ferry from Red Hook lands in Cruz Bay in 20 minutes, the crossing we measured; Varlack Ventures' timetable calls it about 15. The St. John people also search for in Canada is Saint John, New Brunswick, or St. John's, Newfoundland; this page is the island.
- Is there an airport on St. John?
No. The National Park Service's directions put it plainly: there are no airports on St. John, so every flight lands at Cyril E. King airport on the west end of St. Thomas. From there a taxi to Red Hook takes 36 minutes on an ordinary afternoon, and the passenger ferry or the car barge crosses to Cruz Bay; a boat from Crown Bay, near the airport, runs three times a day. The ferry guide times each leg and lists the fares.
- Where does the ferry land on St. John?
In Cruz Bay, at the Loredon L. Boynes Sr. dock in the middle of town, the Virgin Islands Port Authority's passenger dock, which is why Cruz Bay is the one area where a car is optional. The car barges land at the Theovald E. Moorehead terminal at Enighed Pond, a short drive south, so a car and a walk-on passenger arrive at different docks. From the passenger dock, Coral Bay at the far end of the island is 28 minutes by car.
- How far is St. Thomas from St. John?
20 minutes by passenger ferry from Red Hook, on the east end of St. Thomas, to Cruz Bay, the crossing we measured; the Port Authority's schedule calls it about 15. The boat from Charlotte Amalie takes 45 minutes and runs two or three times a day. The docks list under the map places the Red Hook terminal and Cyril E. King airport across the water.
- How many beaches are on the St. John map?
Every beach with a page on this site is a pin on the map, each with its own facts table and the date the facts were checked, and the beach index groups them by shore so you can see which are a drive apart. The North Shore beaches inside the Virgin Islands National Park are the ones most people come for, and only one charges: Trunk Bay, 13 minutes from Cruz Bay by car, $5 per person 16 and over per the National Park Service as of October 2026.
